Plot Twist: The State funds the surgery, but because it wasn't a traditional accident that led to her being disabled, she qualifies for no sort of monetary help, and is treated like an able bodied citizen.

No. This is a valid mental disorder. Some people who suffer from this have cut their legs off with kitchen knives and chainsaws. This is a valid thing and not some feminist privilege thing

what dirty jewish doctor would actually willingly paralyze someone?

Who wouldn't willingly paralyze an idiot who wants it to happen and is willing to pay for it to be done
User avatar #20 to #16 - katarinaismywaifu (01/08/2015) [-]
A doctor should be on that list. They are meant to heal, not harm.

anyone who takes their Hippocratic oath seriously?
User avatar #19 to #18 - katarinaismywaifu (01/08/2015) [-]
I guess people don't honor their vows anymore
#22 to #19 - kanedam ONLINE (01/08/2015) [-]
just so you know... the hippocratic oath isnt part of the education nor has a doctor ever to say it.
#27 to #26 - kanedam ONLINE (01/08/2015) [-]
it's an oath thats hundreds of years old.
it contributes to the idea of medicine being there to just help you get healthy again.

the system nowadays isnt build to be like that. its part fault of the doctors, of the industry and also of the patients.
(i will skip the docs and industry right now and focus on the patients which usually get ignored when people look for flaws)
it's not about being healthy anymore. people smoke, eat unhealthy, dont exercise, dont relax and so on. and when you get sich you dont want to do the "right" thing, you want a pill that will make you feel better immediately. even if you dont need it you dont want to feel the side effects of being sick. and most people dont give their body the time to relax.

so what is a doc supposed to do? thats the way it is.
most of it goes against the hippocratic oath... but thats the way it is.

now get to docs and industry
#29 to #28 - kanedam ONLINE (01/08/2015) [-]
docs:
only very few really start a career in medicine because of the will to help people. most are in this field because of the prestige of the field (the honor of being a doctor has decreased significantly over the last 10 years, but is still a great motivator) and the money one can earn. (again, this has gotten worse too because the shifts got longer and so on).
once you are finished with the education there arent that many that keep on educating themself, teaching enw methods, trying out new stuff or reading/researching stuff outside of what they have already learned. you will often have docs use medics and methods that are basically out of date, but they always did it like this so will keep on doing it. many also primarily focus on reaching a higher career level instead of helping people. and then the money comes in... of course there are a lot of more details to tell.

the industry:
basically its simple: if you're healthy, they wont make money. a healthy person doesnt need medicine or surgery. so a lot of medicine and methods are performed or designed in a way that harms the body (or they just dont use better medicine). there are also many 'diseases' that basically arent really existing and just get invented for money and still get treated. but the other side is that: they invest billions of dollars into new stuff that often really helps people. somehow they need to make their money.

it's a very complex topic and msot people dumb it down to such a degree that they find an easy solution where its hard to find a good solution. usually only one of the three groups has benefits from a solution (either the patients, the industry or the docs) but if the other two groups dont benefit then all three groups will have trouble over time.

there are some nice theories how the medical system should be reformed.
