First, you can have a relationship without sex, but that's not my point.
My point is if she got raped she's pretty much not gonna lust after the d and it can very much happen that she doesn't want the d at all. Or in other words, if you are dating a rape victim don't expect sex for a very long time.

One of my exes was raped. She seemed perfectly normal, she cried when she told me, but other than that I'd never seen her as damaged. (We were both 20 at the time, she was raped at 13/14)

Until her rapist (a family member) came to my home looking for her to "apologize and make peace". She broke down at the door and went back through the house, he got angry, then tried to push past me and follow her through.
I don't think of myself as a particularly hard man, and I'm not trying to wow you with my skills. But I have been in combat sports and martial arts since I was 12. I am very capable of defending myself and people close to me.
I dropped him on the spot, threw him outside and warned him never to come looking for her again. She watched from the window.

She ended the relationship that evening, apparently my violent nature reminded me of him too much... That was the first time she'd ever seen my "violent nature"; though she obviously knew about the other stuff.
Not going to lie, I'd have loved to kill him and make sure he never hurt anybody again. But I like not being in prison too much.

Anybody thinking about getting into martial arts or any self defense related classes, I highly recommend you do it.

I'll be honest, I gave him a good beating, possibly sent him to the hospital. But he was restricted by law from going near her until she allowed it(or some protection act like that), and breaching that he would have been sent back to prison. (He was imprisoned for it, but served less than 5 years because of good behaviour)
So if I had seriously injured him though he didn't come after me to press charges, he would have got nothing out of it but more trouble for himself.

Female user here, do you have any recommendations for women looking to learn self defense? In most cases (and certainly in my case) the best would be something that helps weaker defenders facing stronger attackers.

I left out that there are a lot of girls (most ages 16-25) that learn Krav Maga where I go, so I'm pretty sure that you don't have to be worried about being the only female there.
You also shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed about wanting to be able to defend yourself, I think everybody should.

It's only when you learn a martial art that you realise just how defensless you were before. You could also pick up a taser or mace like ninjaroo said, they allow you to bring an attacker down from a good distance.
I've had a taser used on me (for demonstration purposes) but not a mace, it was an interesting (horrible) experience, I don't think I'd volunteer again.

As somebody else said most martial arts teach you how to defend against any opponent, bigger or smaller. It really depends on the availability in your area, how far you're willing to travel etc.
I'm the biggest guy at the dojo where I do Krav Maga so I'm the most often picked for demonstrations. I would say Krav Maga focuses on burst speed much much more than your strength because your main targets are soft, vulnerable areas(crotch, eyes, throat etc). As such I can recommend it to people of all shapes and sizes, especially women looking to defend themselves again't larger foes(since they could be the most vulnerable and often feel that way).
A small child can deliver a hard enough hit to the throat to hurt a man.
Even a properly trained small adult female can also deliver kicks and punches that will break bone, so imagine that same force applied to an attackers crotch, throat or liver. (Remember that a kick to the crotch will be equally stunning to a female attacker, so kick her in the balls(!) if you get the chance)
Anywhere where soft, sensitive tissue is exposed is a great place to hit.

I would recommend most martial arts, but you could see what's available near you, check out which ones are mainly focused on self defense and which are health/sports based. Being spots focused wouldn't make it a bad choice, it just means that it could take longer before it becomes effective, whereas self defense training is designed to make you safer in the real world from day 1.

I suggest Krav Maga though, it focuses on ending a confrontation as soon as possible, by any means (hurting the opponent first, so they cannot hurt you).

Are you willing to pick up a martial art?
If yes - Any martial art. They all focus on defending yourself to varying degrees of brutality, there's no real reason to pick up one over the other unless you're going to get really hardcore about it. My recommendation would be Tae Kwon Do.

If no - Are tasers legal in your area?
If yes, get one.

If no, get mace.

Well Hapkido is a martial art adapted for self defense I think, taking elements from other martial arts and involving a variety of techniques (strikes and grappling). So i'd recommend the broader self defense system over standard Karate (which generally only focus on strikes).
However both are good for general self defense's sake, but Hapkido I believe will also include training against weapons and multiple opponents.
So I recommend Hapkido, but if you prefer the Karate, it's probably better to stick with which you prefer (you'd have a higher chance at sticking with it for a longer time) but it is always great to know how to grapple and the various joint locks (to break somebody's wrist for example) and how to disarm a knife.

Which branch of martial arts is best for self defense/ fighting?

I don't want anything where their going to tell me it's more about the sport and not about hurting people. Not that I'm a violent person, I just want to be able to protect myself.

For self defense I always preferred stand up striking based martial arts.
A decent boxer can deal with any thug that may try to assault them on the street.

Currently I'm doing Muay Thai and Krav Maga. I started out with Muay Thai, a couple of my friends were being bullied, I wanted to help them and I did not want to be bullied myself. Their parents didn't want them fighting (as if they had a choice at school...) so they wouldn't allow them to join me. At 17 I saw a Krav Maga demonstration, it amazed me so I took it up.
If you want to learn to fight and defend yourself I suggest Krav Maga. It takes all of the best parts from numerous combat systems, including Muay Thai (which in my opinion is the best stand up martial art).

Krav Maga focuses on preemptive attacks and burst counter attacks aimed at the targets most vulnerable areas. It's all about ending a confrontation as soon as possible so you can leave. It's so effective that it's used in military and police forces all around the world. It was designed to be quick and easy to learn while maintaining effectiveness. Training also involves situational awareness and combat against multiple attackers.

Muay Thai is great too, but these days it is a stand up combat sport, but that doesn't remove any of it's effectiveness. Muay Thai is the main stand up technique in modern MMA because of how good it is. It is also one of the most dangerous combat sports, mainly because of the use of elbows and knees, but also the use of the shin in kicks(instead of lighter kicks involving the feet). A kick from a Muay Thai fighter will hit you like a baseball bat, which can and often do break bone.
Muay Thai taught in a self defense training Dojo will always focus on ending a fight as soon as possible (like Krav Maga and most self defense systems).

However, if you can, you should always run away from or attempt to diffuse a possible confrontation and if the attacker has a weapon, always run if you can.

I was molested when I was 7, no joke. The worst part of the experience was not the act itself, it was the aftermath. My parents acting scared and angry, treating me different, telling me I had a bad experience but would get over it, the social workers asking questions, the doctor examining me.
I honestly believe that the act of molestation itself(assuming no penetration) is not as damaging as the aftermath, when you are treated differently for the rest of your childhood. Maybe if my parents never brought it up, or let on that something bad happened, I wouldn't be the cynical apathetic anti-social person I am now. I mean, I have a family, I have kids, but I can't help but imagine how things would have been if it never happened at all, or if I was never told.

Hmm, that might explain why i'm so uneffected by it. I always thought it was just a really weird dream, but one day I heard my one of my aunts talking. Apperantly she knew it happened, and kept me away from the woman who did it, but didn't tell anyone in the family or call the cops because she was worried about her reputation.

Trust me, my friend, there's no guarantee it would be better. I personally don't have experience with it, but my girlfriend of 2.5 years (who I just learned last night cheated on me 2 weeks ago and now has herpes -- and she lives 2000 miles away so I haven't had sex with her since then, thank baby jebus) was sexually assaulted when she was 10 and no one ever found out until she was an adult because she kept it a secret from everyone. Now she has Borderline Personality Disorder pretty bad and has done pretty horrible things to both me and her last ex (who kinda deserved it, but still). And obviously it led her to make a choice like cheating on me and now she'll live with herpes for the rest of her life.

tl;dr take comfort in knowing that you probably came out better for it even though I'm sure it still sucks in a way most people will never fully understand.

Thank you, but I specifically mentioned non penetration. Obviously if there was penetration there would have been assorted amounts of physical pain and damage which would cause mental damage as well. I was not penetrated, someone just touched my privates a couple of times. In the case of non-penetration, I do not believe there would be lasting damage, because the child would not even remember the event or associate it with wrongdoing, unless the parents and social services made it something to remember.

I am sorry about your girlfrends experience, I really am, but it is a whole order of magnitude worse than my experience, so it does not really mesh with the point I was making with less invasive molestation.

Sorry for being unclear but there was no penetration. She was at a "friend's" house where there were supposed to be parents but weren't. She was held down by 4 other children her age while another threatened her and undressed her. She fought her way free, put her clothes on, and hid in a nearby ditch until her parents came to pick her up in the morning. There was no sexual contact.

I am so confused. Again, I am not trying to be a dick, but if she was not assaulted, she was not penetrated, and nothing sexual happened, what is the point you are trying to make? I am sure it was a traumatic and fear inducing event for her, it would be for any young child, but it just went from being an order of magnitude above being touched, to not even being on the molestation rating system radar.

Being undressed by small children while a small child yourself without sexual intent would be bullying, still a bad thing, but a completely different genre than the subject at hand. Still, at least you are cognizant of her issues and trying to work with her.

Sexual assault does not imply penetration. Rape does, but she wasn't raped. Sexual assault is any sort of assault with sexual motivations. My point was that sexual trauma of any kind, penetration or not, sexual touching or not, is extremely damaging psychologically, especially to a young child. The way your situation was handled may very well have given you a negative and cynical worldview, but at the very least it sounds like it taught you what was normal and what wasn't. The reason my girlfriend acts the way she does in many cases is because she honestly doesn't see what's wrong and what's right and it is literally almost impossible (due to her disorder) for her to learn. She is finally starting therapy but it will likely be years before she can truly understand right vs wrong, normal vs inappropriate, safe vs dangerous, etc and that's assuming that she can ever reach that point at all. It's entirely possible that you only know the difference because of the way people acted shortly after what happened to you.

Of course, I have no way of knowing you well enough to say that with any certainty. And while I have an interest in psychology and took a couple classes and have read a lot of article on the subject (and have dealt with my girlfriend's problems for the last 2.5 years), I am no psychiatrist. I really just hoped I could give you another perspective on it to consider, in the hopes it could help in even a slight way.

Do any of you read the description? So you don't have to scroll up, it says, "Please don't share self stories."

It's Makoto Tachiban from Free! I tried very hard to find where the picture itself is from, such as a comic or something, but it seems just to be some art someone made. Also, from the show he looks different, this is a "*****" version.

www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&oq=&gs_l=&q=makoto%20tachiban%20shota#q=makoto+tachibana+shota&spell=1&tbm=isch

This is the Google Images result page, most of it is pretty SFW but you can take a look anyways if you want.
