I don't know why there's so much contention over the pronunciation of gif. Although I am of the hard g persuasion, I understand why others would want to call it otherwise. It's true that there are no universally recognized rules regarding the pronunciation of gif, but to say that reason allows the creator of the word power over it's pronunciation is a little contradictory (since that would be a rule as to the pronunciation of an acronym).

It seems to me that the pronunciation of an acronym evolves from the words similar to it, or from a general understanding of spelling conventions. To this effect, it seems that "gif" came to be pronounced the way it is now due to its similarity to the known (and already pronounceable) word "gift", which has a "hard g" sound instead of the supposed "soft g". To give the creator so much power over its pronunciation long after the fact seems a little silly to me, since it would imply that whoever created an acronym like "NATO" could proclaim that its true pronunciation was "Nah-too" instead of "Nay-toe" (NATO, the acronym, doesn't particularly have a creator, so why would that rule of creator power apply?).

"Jif" seems a little counterintuitive, at least to me, since it not only flaunts the obvious similarities between "gif" and "gift" (as far as apparent pronunciation would go); but it calls to mind something that already exists as well I'm not saying I don't like peanut butter though , whereas gif does not well, I mean, it doesn't make me think of anything really other than gifs themselves .

To be honest, I don't actually care what you wanna do -just felt like rambling about something instead of studying. Stay hard G like a gif, FJ.

> I don't know why there's so much contention

You realize the ongoing contention is simply because everybody continually feels the need to expound at length justifying their opinion on the subject. Like you just did.

I could expound something else if you'd like

Well, when you're right, you're right.
