I always thought "they all look alike" referred to individuals, not different nationalities. So if you said "all Asians look alike", you don't just mean you can't distinguish between Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, etc, but rather that you can't distinguish between different Asian individuals. Which is a teensy bit racist - or at least, people who say stuff like that tend to be racist.

Many Chinese, Japanese and Koreans themselves have trouble distinguishing between Chinese, Japanese and Korean people based on purely on physical appearance, just like white Europeans might not be able to tell what European country a particular white person is from. It's no big deal, even if it may be a bit awkward when you make a mistake.

I never understood though why it's "racist" to not be able to tell 2 different people apart.
I couldn't tell 2 people apart if they looked similar. Be it 2 Chinese people, 2 African-Americans, whatever.
I've gotten irritated with movies because for some reason all the characters are white, tall, and blond.

None of these should insinuate racism. People don't start to notice fine details of others until they start spending time with them.

Racism is about stereotyping, so if it comes from an attitude of dismissal, disrespect or typecasting, it is racist, but people jump to this conclusion a lot- out of paranoia, or wanting to feel victimised or whatever, but it's true that there's nothing inherently racist about having a hard time telling people apart.

You're right, and some people really do look similar, but it is a bit racist when you say all black people look alike (or whatever race).

I suppose you can't help it if you literally have trouble telling them apart because your eyes/brain aren't accustomed to black or Asian features. Similarly, people in China can't really be blamed for thinking many white people look alike. Got to cut people some slack in those cases. But if you live in the US or a similarly diverse country, you're bound to encounter other races often enough that it shouldn't be a huge problem.

Right, I wouldn't say they (any group of "they", even white people) ALL look alike, but I would say I'd have difficulty telling 2 apart if I hadn't gotten to know them.
