This is how I always pictured it working.
If the ground is the 1st floor, then the basement is the 0th floor, and the sub-basement is then the -1st floor, and that just seems messy.

You walk into a building off the street and you are standing on the floor. Therefore that is the first floor.

It's called a forest floor.

Both of these have explanations that both make perfect sense.

There is no 'right' here.

Anyone who claims otherwise is a narrow-minded ignoramus.

Now shut up about it. Or I'll ram my fist up your ignor-anus.

in america, we call it either the first floor or ground floor. We call it the first floor because it's the actual first floor you walk on.

but consider this.. fluor not only protects our teeth, but also is the first surface we stand on ina buidling. Therefore the first floor is the first floor.

The phrase was originally 'First floor up', 'second floor up', 'third floor up' etc.. People just cut out the 'up'. So the ground level floor is ground floor, and the one you get to via the first flight of stairs is the FIRST FLOOR up from ground level.

It's called the ground floor because it's at ground level, not floor level

Personally this is one of those things that the US and others who say the first floor is the floor you walk into when you get into a building

I always love how people feel they're superior because they do things differently for example, use the first floor thing or the classic "American way to write a date MM/DD/YY is stupid it makes more sense the british way DD/MM/YY(YY)" . Apparently cultural differences can't exist.

American way of writing the date still makes sense as from left to right is max number you can put in each spot. You can put only 1 of 12 numbers in the left part, 1 of 31 in the middle, and an infinite number on the right.
