This is how I always pictured it working.
If the ground is the 1st floor, then the basement is the 0th floor, and the sub-basement is then the -1st floor, and that just seems messy.

You walk into a building off the street and you are standing on the floor. Therefore that is the first floor.

You are standing on the ground outside a building, you walk into the building and you're on the ground floor.

Numbers can start at 0 or 1. It's your own opinion really, I was just showing you that your statement could be very easily contradicted.

That is fine and all, but i most people don't start assigning order to things with zero, they start with the number 1.

Well it seems a lot of people do, considering how many call it the ground floor.

There's no right or wrong to this topic, it's just a matter of opinion and where you live.

No, that is the ground, there is no carpet, wood, or any structure underneath you. Only dirt and grass.

If it's intended for living purposes then yes, it's first floor. If it's basement then it's basement.

Both of these have explanations that both make perfect sense.

There is no 'right' here.

Anyone who claims otherwise is a narrow-minded ignoramus.

Now shut up about it. Or I'll ram my fist up your ignor-anus.

in america, we call it either the first floor or ground floor. We call it the first floor because it's the actual first floor you walk on.
