Florida man here, they are indeed beautiful snakes but there popularity as a pet here has caused them to become a major invasive species here. People release them illegally when they become to big and they, not having any predators, eat everything including large animals including alligators. They are kind of too badass for Florida to handle
I am sure the 10 foot pythons being released by pet owners didn't help any either. I also never heard about this import facility must not have had much coverage in the news.
Hurricane Andrew, sure you've heard of it, I live in the UK and I have. Also released several other species such as nile monitors and iguanas. There's no evidence of released pets being the problem at all, if it was then you'd be seeing a lot more morphs in the wild as opposed to normals.
I can't find an article that attributes it to the hurricane. The pet owner theory is atleast being speculated. No one says that it was hurrican Andrew. New York times, Time magazine, NBC, National Park Service. Every single one of them says that it was the result of years of pet owners releasing the snakes into the wild. No site mentions Andrew
Just google "hurricane andrew python import" or something similar. It's not hard.
If it was due to released pets then why is it only florida and the surrounding area with large reptiles from Africa, Asia etc making a home there? There's plenty sources and reports of what happened, people just like to blame it on released big scary snakes due to propaganda and fearmongering.
Conservation Manager Higgins is especially concerned with preventing breeding by the snakes. "Our mission is to keep breeding populations from formĀing." She pointed out that this is not a problem exclusive to Florida or to snakes. "The Everglades problem startĀed from a handful of pets being released, and it can spread." A quote from the first article. They mention the facility as having added on to the already problematic python population. The second article is from the UK but it does agree with you. The third article states that alot of the everglades python population could be from the import facility but anything above south Florida are the result of pet release.Besides all I typed in was "pythons in Florida". You had to mention Andrew for it to show up.
