WARNING: OPINION INBOUND:

I absolutely ******* hate the movie/TV series of this. They are NOTHING like the books. Like, the only similarities between the two are the names of the characters. Hiccup is supposed to be a scrawny little **** right to the end of the novels, his mum is adventuring, NOT ******* DEAD, Fishlegs is a skinny ginger with glasses and Toothless is small and green. The movie is decent enough, but it should be called what it is and the characters shouldn't be called what they are. It is its own series; saying that it's even based off of the books is wrong.

his mum isn't dead in the movies
haven't you seen the trailer for the new one?
User avatar #6 to #1 - vortexrain (03/16/2014) [-]
She's not dead. There was a thing on FX recenlty during a showing of HTTYD that gave an inside look at the sequal. She's off somewhere, and has been hiding dragons away in a paradise. She hid them 'cause the bad guy in the sequel is planning are using dragons to rule over people.

A kids fairy tale movie is different than the original?
That has NEVER been done before.
I understand your outrage.

Seriously, drop the ******* superiority complex. Its a completely different thing and wasn't meant to be the same.
User avatar #51 to #47 - chimpaflimp (03/16/2014) [-]
If it wasn't meant to BE the same, it shouldn't be CALLED the same either.
User avatar #76 to #51 - helenwheels (03/17/2014) [-]
I mean ikr!
Disney always stayed true to the original story! That's why sleeping beauty was raped so often in the movie! It's called the same so it happened.

User avatar #77 to #76 - chimpaflimp (03/17/2014) [-]
That was changed to make it family friendly. They changed HTTYD just for the sake of changing it.
User avatar #78 to #77 - helenwheels (03/17/2014) [-]
You mean they added their own creative twist?!
WHAT THE **** !
Disney never did that either!
User avatar #79 to #78 - chimpaflimp (03/17/2014) [-]
>Changed ******************* everything except for names and the fact that there are dragons.
>Creative twist.

COUNT OPINION INBOUND
1. His mother isnt dead. Watch the trailer for number 2.
2. I own both the books and the movie. If the film was like the books it would be stupid. The amount of ' ***** and 'farting' jokes and how annoying toothless can be at times. Not to mention that the dragons can talk in the books and toothless has a stutter which can get irritating to read. = that dragons in the books start out as self centered pricks.
3. They are based on the setting of the books but are not direct conversions.
4. The author herself helped with the film and approved it.
5. I prefer the films to the books, while i like the books and think they are awesome, i think the film is amazing and alot more 'feely'.

User avatar #60 to #1 - hailhisnoodliness (03/16/2014) [-]
I suppose it could be defended by saying in the book hiccup is hiccup III and in the movie he is just hiccup, making him his grandfather, who is refered to as a hero all the way through the books
#54 to #1 - ohlookahollybush (03/16/2014) [-]
I'm an avid fan of the books. I watched the trailer and have refused to see it since.
User avatar #55 to #54 - chimpaflimp (03/16/2014) [-]
The film is good, but it's a standalone series. It is most definitely NOT part of the HTTYD series.
#11 to #1 - anon (03/16/2014) [-]
Welcome to 80% of all movie adaptations: of a book. And when that happens I treat the movie as if its a completely different sorry, at best inspired by the books.
#17 to #1 - jazzytheferret (03/16/2014) [-]
At least it wasn't Eragon?
#26 to #17 - thebaseballexpert (03/16/2014) [-]
as one who watched the movie before reading the book, I enjoyed the Eragon movie. Though it could have followed more of the story from the book, it was still a decent stand alone film.
#28 to #26 - jazzytheferret (03/16/2014) [-]
It would seem subjecting yourself to said film not only skewed your views; but also left you mentally handicap. You have my deepest sympathy and I hope you recover soon.
User avatar #36 to #28 - thebaseballexpert (03/16/2014) [-]
no but seriously, what about it makes you dislike it so much? Visually it was good, from what i remember, the acting was good. It wasn't a Hollywood blockbuster, so it inherently shouldn't be rated against the "best" movies ever made. Honestly, i guarantee if you watch the movie objectively, it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. At least it wasn't that last airbender movie
#41 to #36 - jazzytheferret (03/16/2014) [-]
I try to watch things objectively. To me it had extremely shallow characters and nearly no development tools being used to progress the story or make you feel a connection. I will give you the graphics part, Saphira looked great. However, that doesn't make up for what was basically a video summary of an epic. The actors had such a hard time putting emotion or feeling into lines simply because the characters were turned from unique individuals to copy paste generic (classes). My last punch at it will be that they had about 30-40 minutes of solid stock story and did not take time to flesh it out due to fearing a long movie (might cause boredom) with a younger intended audience.

I'm all with you there, bro
#21 to #1 - luckybomb (03/16/2014) [-]
I kinda agree about how different the two are. Like, I think the film is brilliant, and it's good they've made it more visually enthralling and dramatic... But damn, I absolutely LOVED Toothless in the books. He was this pathetic, snotty little arsehole of a dragon that I just wanted to cuddle the **** out of (I also loved how cute the illustrator made him look!).
#16 to #1 - victorycry (03/16/2014) [-]
I didn't even know there WERE books, so that didn't ruin the movie for me. You have my sympathy lol. I think the second one is going to be a lot better though.

why do they have to be like the books?
User avatar #52 to #38 - chimpaflimp (03/16/2014) [-]
It's not the storyline changes that bother me, it's the blatant lore raping, IE appearance of every single last main an secondary character in the book. The only one who really looks like his description in the book is Hiccup's dad.
User avatar #39 to #1 - spanishiqiustion (03/16/2014) [-]
i enjoy both i like seeing a different adventure they take with their dragons
#12 to #1 - kavrick ONLINE (03/16/2014) [-]
It's pretty disgusting how much the changed it, it's just like they just took the general concept of dragons and Vikings and said " **** it" to the entire story, which i dont understand in the slightest because the story in the books is far better than the movies
#69 to #12 - anon (03/16/2014) [-]
