But gestation is measured in the form of weeks...
User avatar #56 to #8 - capslockrage (08/31/2014) [-]
No, you ******* idiot.
Why did so many idiots thumb this up?
#50 to #8 - carrotpotato (08/31/2014) [-]
But it's not 8 months. It's something between 8 and 9 months. Month is pretty ****** measurement of time anyways because of the inconsistency of their length. Week is always 7 days while month is 28, 29, 30 or 31 depending on which time of the year/decade it is.
#11 to #8 - anon (08/31/2014) [-]
36 weeks is actually 9 months. And gestation is measured in weeks, not months.
#22 to #11 - anon (08/31/2014) [-]
A month consists of 31 days, not 28. So 36 weeks equal 8 1/2 months you insolent **** .

Why do people use inch/ yards / miles and not metric system.
Why do people use inch/ yards / miles and not metric system.
User avatar #38 to #24 - ragingbrony (08/31/2014) [-]
That's not a good comparison since Weeks, months and years are used everywhere, while measuring systems aren't.
No matter what country you're from, saying 5 months, will be easier than 22 weeks.
#51 to #38 - carrotpotato (08/31/2014) [-]
Well there is some similarity. The metric system is more consistent in that 1 meter is always 10 decimeters, 1dm is always 10cm etc. whereas week is more consistent than a month in that one week is always 7 days or around 10100 minutes while a months is 28, 29, 30 or 31. Sure the average is always around 30,4 days but 30,4 isn't really a nice number to be used.
User avatar #40 to #4 - talldumbdork (08/31/2014) [-]
Weeks are more specific in medicine. During my OB rotation as a student nurse, we used weeks to gauge fetal development, and it helped determine premature vs mature, brain development, and cause for alarm if uterine contractions or excessive bleeding occur. Prenatal medicines and procedures are also based on weeks, not months.
User avatar #9 to #4 - sursum (08/31/2014) [-]
Because it is more specific, but I agree that that you should probably say the month and then the week, rather than just total weeks.
User avatar #47 to #9 - missaddie (08/31/2014) [-]
Gestation is measured by the week due to the fact that babies grow that fast. It makes sense to say '6 months and one week pregnant' but you have to think about which week that would be in the progress of the pregnancy. So by saying 33 weeks instead, I would know several things specific to that time frame, that if it were generalized in the months I wouldn't:
7 weeks left of the estimated length of the pregnancy. (Which you could know but it's easier)
If the baby was born now, there is a 90% chance it would survive because their lungs form by the 32nd week.
The baby will drop to the pelvis within the next week.
The baby probably isn't 5 pounds yet.

I don't know that was a poor example but it's because of the speed of the baby's growth. It also helps with hospital appointments and milestones in the pregnancy

Once the little **** is born you shouldn't have to say it in months though that's like measuring miles by saying the amount of feet.

User avatar #72 to #47 - sursum (09/01/2014) [-]
Yeah I'm aware, however I still find it annoying when it is said in normal conversation to somebody who probably has no knowledge of such things, yes it is an irrational irritation
User avatar #73 to #72 - missaddie (09/01/2014) [-]

I remember watching an episode of Too Cute about those sphinx cats. It was not at all too cute. When the mother was pregnant you could see it's big dangly cat nipples and it was fairly unpleasant. Even the kittens weren't particularly cute and I think everything's cute.

everyone asking why people don't refer to pregnancy in months, rather than weeks

4 weeks is 28 days
a month is 30-31, except in February
those extra days would throw everything off
so it's measured in weeks.
