THE POOREST PRESIDENT
Bl THE WORLD
This image of Uruguay‘ s president went viral recently
and some people criticised him for his pasture and
clothes.
Jose Mullen, currently the president of Uruguay, is
know tor being a rarity among powerful politicians, as
he chooses to donate around 90% his , 000
500) monthly salary to charities that benefit poor
people and small entrepreneurs.
Guerrilla bad ass...
A guerrilla fighter for Supamario l a "Robin hood"
organization that stole from the rich and gave to the
poor) he was imprisoned twice, kept in horrible
conditions, escaped once, and was only apprehended
after being shot six times by the police. He was released
fourteen years later when a constitutional democracy
was restored.
Uruguay' s presidential palace
Although this beautiful palace with 42 stall members
is available to him he instead lives on a small farm a
few minutes from the capital,
House and car
He drives a 1987 Beetle, and is a part time
farmer, growing (a kind of flower) tor
sale at nearby markets. He lives in a small house with his
wile, who was also an imprisoned guerrilla fighter and
member at , who is now a Uruguayan
senator.
His only protection are two guards positioned on his
road (required by the government) and his three legged
dog Manuela.
Under his presidency Uruguay has legalized marijuana
and marriage, while also enacting one of the
region' s most sweeping abortion rights laws and sharply
boosting the use of renewable energy saunas like wind
and biomass. He does not like to be called the worlds
poorest president, stating that "It is not the man who has
be little, but the man who craves more, who is poor."
This man is leading by example. it is clear the power has
not corrupted him. He leads tar his people. We need
more world leaders like him,

That's not the current president, might want to mention it before reposting.

who is then?

Tabare Vazquez. Mujica didn't run because the Uruguyan constitution bans consecutive presidential terms, I believe.

So he can run after Vasquez's run ends?
User avatar #116 to #115 - ninegagxd (10/23/2015) [-]
Legally, yes. Vazquez was both Mujica's predecessor and successor.

This a little ****** up though. Like, you can't run twice in a row but you can run multiple times as long as someone else goes in-between those runs. I understand that it does have it's ups since you'd be giving other people a chance to see if maybe there is someone better than the current president, but damn not if the current president would get more votes than whoever wins the next election.

He's overrated because he died. Seriously, what did he do?
He launched the Bay of Pigs Invasion, resolved the Cuban Missile Crisis, and began American involvement in Vietnam. Then he died.
Overall, not bad, but not great either.
User avatar #22 to #21 - talpss (10/23/2015) [-]
Space Race, anyone? He also started the peace corps, gave a great speech in Berlin, helped end the Civil Rights movement by giving equal rights to all (he also took out some of women's rights issues at the same time), and was all around a really intelligent guy.
User avatar #35 to #22 - somuchfreedom (10/23/2015) [-]
no no, he promised civil rights and kind of got the ball rolling, but it was LBJ who actually was president when congress passed the civil rights act
User avatar #76 to #35 - brobathehutt (10/23/2015) [-]
To be fair he was dead when LBJ was president and if not for him the civil rights movement would of probably taken longer to come about, although LBJ would of probably done the same thing.
#106 to #76 - hungryherny (10/23/2015) [-]
Nevertheless he was regarded by Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement as a tokenist, presenting a liberal appearance over an actual belief.
#131 to #22 - anon (10/23/2015) [-]
JFK was NOT responsible for the civil rights act of 1964 or the voting rights act of 1965. Johnson knew how to manipulate congress to do things they didn't want to do, so he was able to force those bills through. Both those acts were done AFTER JFK's assasination, and even though they were passed "in his memory" he never had any intention of doing it. Johnson just did that to get suport from the american people.
#207 to #131 - anon (10/23/2015) [-]
He WAS a proponent for Civil Rights Legislation though, and I doubt it would've passed at the time that it did if he hadn't died.
#205 to #21 - anon (10/23/2015) [-]
He took responsibility for the Bay of Pigs' failure instead of trying to pin the blame on others, and in case you didn't realize it, the Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever got to thermonuclear war - he quite literally saved the ******* planet.

I hate to be that guy, but Reagan was a puppet. Sure, for some great things, but people would go out of their way to get close to him, because they knew how easy it was to get him to see their point of view.

Reagan was awful, he took down several regulations, COMPLETELY destroyed mental asylums which has created the homeless problem we have today and part of the prison problem as well, began the war on drugs and brought cocaine to various ghettos to pay for wars in South America. Reagan didn't veto the tax raises because it would of been beyond retarded to veto them at the time they were necessary. To top it all off, he wasn't even mentally fit to be president throughout his second term, his wife (who got political advise from a ******* astrologer by the way) pretty much ran the show, and to be fair he did a better job when he was running than when that worthless cunt was, but doing a better job than someone who may as well be mentally retarded means nothing. Reagan was a great speaker and that was the only thing that was great about him.

Not that much actually when you look at America's overall budget. A few billion is the equivalent of losing 50 cents in the couch cushions, yet everybody acts like it's a huge deal. And we have actual reasons, even if it isn't a dick measuring contest with the ruskies this round.

The 2008 bank bailout of $750 billion was greater than all the money NASA had received in its half-century history; two years’ U.S. military spending exceeds it as well. Right now, NASA’s annual budget is half a penny on your tax dollar. For twice that, a penny on a dollar, we can transform the country from a sullen, dispirited nation, weary of economic struggle, to one where it has reclaimed its 20th century birthright to dream of tomorrow.

Some people criticized him for posture and clothing?

Really?

He's got the mark of a true leader, a quality we've mostly forgotten over the years... at least as far as our traditional "leaders" are concerned.

A leader stands with his people, and leads with them... through thick and thin. He is not invested in the interests of any given party, but rather he is vested in the interests of the majority. Understanding the world and those around you is one hell of a trait for a leader to have. Devoting yourself to your people is even greater.

User avatar #218 to #215 - victhree (10/23/2015) [-]
Still not convinced you aren't a troll, but consider the following:

Firstly, not being able to get married can be a huge legal inconvenience for a couple. For example, their options for adopting will be massively crippled, something that affects homosexuals especially hard. Not to mention the fact that if it changed one's life so little, straight people wouldn't marry either. It's an important ceremony in life.

Secondly, a government should be able to deal with issues of all sizes. The fact that it doesn't affect a huge portion of the population doesn't mean it isn't worth solving. Imagine if the law didn't allow people over 90 to get married. Sure, it wouldn't be a national crisis, but it's a violation of equality and freedom, the basic values of our society. This kind of fallacy doesn't just piss off homosexuals, it gets anyone who stands for those ideals mad. And rightfully so. The government isn't nearly as busy as it seems. It can both deal with home problems and international crises at the same time. And as a side note, there are far more gays than people seem to think.
