Deterioration over time. They're pretty old, let's keep em there for a good while longer by not letting shoes erode the stone. It's the same reason they don't allow photographs in faroah tombs and the like, the light would over time fade off all the paintings.

Random fun fact they never told you in school (or at least they never told me)

the pyramids were actually shiny, they did not always look like sandstone, they were plated and they could be seen from miles away, even at night. Just the crusaders, and people over the years, and wear and tear made them look how they are now.

probably because schools in my area are ****..

they also never tought me that
>the greeks statues were not white, they were painted bright primary colors.. the pantheon was probably colored like a rainbow gay pride building
>the native americans build a mound of dirt larger than the great pyramids, and they had a city larger than london, just people assumed that they had small tribes because a plague wiped out 96 percent of them.

There's kind of a debate there with the statues. Some people think that they were originally bronze statues, but were melted down during war time to make weapons and shields. The evidence for this is, that they've got a handful of partially melted statues and there have been some very large weapons caches discovered where statues should have been, but weren't. IE, there was a mount for a statue, but there was no statue.
The statues are white now because they're replicas.

Dude, it's not like it's a lost civilization we're talking about. We have much literature from that period, describing the stone statues.

Yes, some statues were made of stone, but a lot of the really famous statues were bronze. The armless chick for instance. It's a statue of Venus by the way.

I've had about Venus de Milo in art and we were never told that it was made of bronze originally. Quite the contrary actually, since we talked about why the artist had chosen the material he did.

It's actually a statue of Aphrodite, who is technically the same as Venus.

Well, I've been taught that the stone statues are replicas of bronze originals. Either one of us could be right, because historians can't agree because the records of the era are erratic. Also, some statues were made of stone, and some were made of bronze. Both might have been painted over to give some color to, but we really don't know witch ones were made of witch material originally.

Yeah, we do. I don't mean to be an asshole, but we do have a lot of literature etc. from the time. I bet you can't name a statue that was originally made of bronze but is of stone now, and Venus de Milo is not a valid answer since I've spent 10 minutes googling without even finding anyone mentioning that it was originally made of bronze.

I invite you to read the first paragraph of the 'materials' heading.
There you are. There were both marble and bronze statues. Perhaps Venus was not originally made of bronze, but there were other statues that were.

You started out saying that all statues were originally from bronze and the ones of stone are replicas. Now you are trying to prove that they even used bronze.

And I told you to name a statue, not find one.

Well, it would appear I was wrong on the first point. There were indeed statues made of stone in ancient Greece. There were also bronze statues. The Victorious Youth being the first picture of a bronze statue on the wiki article I provided. I did check with Google to make sure it's a Greek statue, and also actually bronze before I posted.

Me too. Except the painting thing. I was taught that the statues were made of bronze and as the need arose they were melted down into weapons and armor. Kind of like very nice looking resource storage.
