As a former fat guy that goes to the gym, this was my biggest concern. Judgment wasn't verbal, but it was more than apparent. Then you have the awesome people that encourage you to keep going and tell you how you can improve your form or gains.

Thumbed for genuineness.

i used to be concerned with this but then I just asked myself who gives a shit, it's for me. (Pic of me progressing 3/1/2014 is the most recent)

Mock fat people who come to the gym.
Bad.

Mock fat people who come to the gym, work up a massive goddamned sweat, and keep coming back day after day?
Worse

But... mock fat people who come to the gym, try one machine, get frustrated, start whining and complaining, then leave and never return.
Acceptable.

This has happened twice at my gym, once a chubbster turns up full of ego like it aint gonna be hard, spends 3 minutes on a treadmill (i know this because i take 3 minutes between sets and she was done by my next one) gets off, complains her legs hurt, and she wants to sit down, and then leaves. Never seen her since.

The second time a guy walked in, huge fat guy, tries his dab hand at weights, assumes his fat will be enough (usually fat guys are quite strong, but they arent resilient). Bicep curl with 20kg on the bar, not bad, but he does three, then puts it down, walks around the gym, drinking water, wiping away sweat with a towel, then leaves, never to come back.

I have seen some seriously overweight people put more effort into their workout or routine than most of the slender/buff guys in the gym. They know whats expected and they know its gonna be hard, these fat fuckers are relentless, sweaty subplanets with HEART!!!

Meh, lifweighting gyms are boring to me.

Try out a martial arts/sports combat gym, guys and gals.

It's fun, it's social, you'll be guided by people who know what they're doing and you'll get a properly fit body, as well as some potentially useful skills.

I started going to the gym 2 years ago. Around the same time a skinny guy joined the gym too. He was a bit shy but very friendly.

He was not a handsome fellow, though. His head in a constant, forward position, not unlike a turtle. His shoulders were hanging and his feet were always pointing a bit towards each other. I thought of many people I've met in my life with different podiatric problems, or crooked spines who would assume the same position. Needless to say, I didn't think this guy was going to get anywhere. Still, I've been wrong before and it didn't stop me from being friendly like with a lot of different people.

I went to the gym three times a week. Mostly when I went, I would see him too. The first month was actually pretty awkward. His running was terrible, he could barely lift 10 kg and people generally ignored him. That didn't stop him from coming, though.

I went on vacation for two weeks, came back and saw the guy had put on some mass. His feet were a bit better aligned, and his head was in a little less turtle-like position. He could already lift more than me, run for a longer while than me and he was doing some pretty complex exercises.

Skip a year and a half, this guy has had the same kind of progress and he's now built like achilles but still with his head a little bit forward. People come to him to ask him for advice and he brings a lot of different friends to the gym (mostly skinny guys like he was once). He doesn't come off as shy anymore, and he's taken a bit more care of his skin and such. I'm glad I have seen someone change as gradually and surely like him.

This has always been the most bullshit reason for out of shape people not to go to the gym however. Everyone in the gym wants everyone else to succeed. If there was an incredibly out of shape person struggling and confused in the gym, if they asked anyone at all for some help in my gym including me would give them tons of advice as well as where to research workouts and such. If anyone was making fun of a fat person for attempting to get in shape I'd take that person down a few notches. Plus the amount of amazing asses are just a gym bonus.

TLDR: Gyms are full of awesome people, and people who are afraid to go probably haven't even tried it. Dem asses tho.

You might be laughing at a fat person at the gym if it's January 1st and you think they'll be gone by next week. Show up after that and the laughs stop.

People do this every day, all the time, but in different forms too. They just look at others and say "That person is different. I'm superior." on no valid basis.

I have never seen or heard people make fun of fat people in the gym. Ive been working out for 5 years I think it's an excuse and a myth fat people have concocted in their own head to not go If anything people are extremely helpful I remember that this one fat guy had made so much progress that the regulars gave him an applause and the gym staff gave him a free protein shake bottle and a sports bag we only giggle at people who are doing things wrong Then we help them out.

Normally I'm a calm guy.
I lift sometimes nothing serious, just times to times with my friends.
Then one time, this big man and big woman, who I suspects to be a couple are walking on the treadmills and sweating like shit, and you know, anybody would think "good job", but these slim-fit-girls had nothing but bad words to whisper about them.

I had enough and told them to shut up.
They just looked at me, like some kind of a rapist.
>still not regretting it
