Gambling just seems so dumb

Look at it this way. I think gambling is fun. If I go out gambling I go out expecting to lose everything I bring with me, and therefore view it as x dollars for a night of fun. Now should I win money, suddenly I have the side benefit of having more money than I came in with rather than spending it to have a good time.

Problem is that most people have that attitude so if you find yourself in a position of winning money early on, you are most likely going to carry on gambling until you lose all your money

Well, gambling ain't actually "dumb" It's usually (like every other problem in life) It's the people that are stupid.

People can play responsible, and use the system to their own advantage. Just because u can go "gamble" doesn't mean ur supposed to put in everything you have. That's when we go back to people being dumb. You always put a percentage of your income to a betting site or in poker (3-5% here)

Last but not least, Poker is in no way gambling (if u want to play like a fish, ur a gambler though), you're literally playing the player (especially if it's live).
I used to have the same sense of thinking as you when i was younger, but i found out "hey, people are stupid and just waste their money" All my trips so far have been free, just because of poker.

Betting on the world cup games is ******* dumb, i can tell you that ******* ronaldo giving that pass that made it USA 2 - 2 Portugal. I would've won A ******* OF CASH

Poker is a game of skill, better players will tend to win in the long run.
It's more about looking at what hands could beat you and how likely you are to hit the cards you need. If you get good enough you can get into reading faces, tells, stuff like that but even online, it's incredibly skill-based.

Texas hold'em isn't gambling because you have a significant amount of control over the outcome. It is based on playing against your opponents, not the dealer. Psychoanalysis of nervous ticks and physical behavior can give away lies and even without trying to get into that by playing the game based on probabilities you have a solid chance of winning. If you are half decent at math and are perceptive of nervous behaviors than you can gain a major statistical edge over your opponents. It becomes gambling when you stop playing with a strategy and keep throwing money in out of desperation.

Playing with losing odds that you cannot have an effect on is completely ******* retarded.

Poker is a little bit different than just an odds game- you are playing other people, so it has to do with reading people and figuring what they might have vs what you have. You don't have to call them. Most places have some sort of $5 poker game night, 4+ hours of entertainment for $5 isn't a bad deal.

my old school buddy was a gambler who went to las vegas once a month for a week and he made about 10 to 20 thousand euros per trip(if you believe what he says) and i myself have done small time gambling with winnings of like 800 euros at best.

its all about counting your money and not overplaying it.you control the game not otherway around

most professionals don't bet their own money and just play competitions with 'fake money' then win some kind of cash prize if they win all the chips.

tournaments such as this are played with an entry fee. which often funds part of the prize money.
You receive X number of chips and try to gain them as you move up through the tables and players get knocked out. And its not a blind game of cards as you might expect. To be a good poker player takes an impressive level of skill and intelligence.
