They never have the girl pretend to be 17 or 16, which are legal ages in Ny and NJ for example, they always go below 15. No man over 18 should be going after a girl younger than 15. If you disagree with that, we have a problem.

It isn't the show that is ruining people's lives, it is most certainly the person themselves. The show lays out the trap, but the person takes the illegal bait, damn well knowing that what they are setting out to do is illegal. Now if it was something as a preexisting relationship and one of the people in it turned 18, there is a very slim chance that they would be prosecuted on it. However I have watched "To catch a predator" for many years and I have heard **** that made my skin crawl, and they have shown guys going after 11-13 year olds too. But the ones who are truly ******* up people's lives are the ones who do meet actual young children online, and pray on them. That is what this show is trying to deter, and open eyes about.

A cop can pretend to be a drug dealer and offer to sell you drugs and then arrest you for trying to buy his drugs, even if there were no drugs at the scene. By admitting "I am here to buy marijuana from you" you fall under the jurisdiction of mens rea - which has an entire wikipedia page you can read about it on.

Civil disobedience, appeals, petitions, speaking with governmental representatives, etc., are all very important and should absolutely be used when you think a law is morally wrong. In other countries there are often laws protecting consensual sex as long as they are reasonably aged and it was clear that no abuse was taking place.
