Upside Down Flag
Flying the American flag upside down is an officially recognized signal of distress.
Here is the relevant part of the US Code of Laws regarding how to fly the flag when in distress:
THE UNITED STATES FLAG CODE
Title 4, Chapter 1
§ 8(a)The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
Most individuals who have served in military service of our nation should recognize this signal.
People ask if it is OK to fly the flag upside down in protest, for example: to protest the economy, an election or against the war. The Flag Code states it should only be displayed upside down when there is extreme danger to life or property. It would be quite the stretch to make an argument that any type of political purpose would constitute “dire distress”. It is recommended that people who wish to make a protest in this fashion do so that it is respectful of the flag. We must remember that our flag represents the government of the United States and all of its policies. It also stands for our freedom of speech, our right to practice or even not to practice the religion of our choice and it represents one united nation in all its glory and the American values. Most importantly it stands for the sacrifices made past, present and in the future to protect our freedoms. Read the proper ways to display the American flag under specific circumstances on our Displaying The Flag page.
Even though Ill probably get hate for it, it's never really healthy to look at an entire group and act like they all believe the same thing. They aren't becoming self-aware. Many have seen the main issue from the very beginning. Some individuals are definitely starting to come to realization that they have been fighting the problem from a flawed angle though.
But overall yes, I agree, it's great to see some are finally taking notice to the larger issues at hand and leaving their bubble self pity and finger pointing.
devil's advocate here. i'm going to leave my points of view completely out of this and remain neutral for the sake of rationality.
"black lives matter" doesn't mean "only black lives matter." that's like going to an AIDS walk and saying, "cancer deaths matter too! what, cancer patients DON'T matter?" or telling the it gets better project "hey, you're standing up for the bullied LGBT community, but what about the overweight youth too?" for a simpler comparison: does saying "chocolate is a good flavor of ice cream" mean "chocolate is the only good flavor of ice cream?" *obviously can't compare ice cream to people, but the idea is there*
whether you agree with the movement or not, "black lives matter" is a phrase used to counter what they see as the public's downplay of the deaths of unarmed black men. "black lives matter" is said to direct attention to problems that are claimed to solely burden people of color.
A frat house was shown in a short video chanting racial slurs. An Oklahoma University linebacker went on an explicit rant about it. The linebacker apologized for his conduct before the frat members did.
As an African American I've been scared to say this because other black people usually reject this way of thinking. But god is this the truth. It gave me the strength to add it to my facebook so hopefully we can change the mindset or something. I love this so much.
It's funny because holding onto that thinking won't really do much of anything either. Respectability politics means **** all, and y'all are gonna learn that the very hard way.
now THAT is a black man
its good to see theres inteligence in their community
i just hope ******* understand what hes saying and dont hurt him like they hurt that black kid trying to save his neighbourhood
