I thought it was a scale model of an ancient city, like something you'd see at a museum.

I never got it. Is Warhammer 40k a computer game, or is it a plastic figure game?

But in all seriousness, Warhammer 40k is both. It originally started over 20 years ago when Games Workshop(Company who produces Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40k, the LOTRO tabletop and Hobbit tabletop games) decided to expand their I.P. from simply Fantasy to Sci-fi. When it first started out, it was simply released under "Rogue Trader" as popularity raised in the hobby for this new sci-fi game they expanded from what is considered the 40k bible to what we call Big Rule Book.

The tabletop following is quite large and is often considered one of the better if not best "wargaming" options out there and is often the gateway that many players get their feet wet into tabletop wargaming. Eventually Blizzard(Sound familiar?) was contracted to develop a game for them based upon Warhammer 40k, but support was scrapped and what we know as Starcraft came to be because after so much investment put into the game by Blizzard they couldn't simply shelve a game.(In the 90s shelving a major development almost always spelled death for that company.)

Eventually, the popularity for RTS Sci-fi games and the interest in Warhammer 40k garnered enough to where Relic was contracted and a video game was developed. Sadly, the current state of Warhammer 40k as a video game(RTS wise) is very rocky at the moment.

But the tabletop following is still large.
