Dane here.
I'm truly happy for Norway's wealth, and we are not in a bad position either here in Denmark. But it's a little painful to know that the majority of Norway's oil-wealth was once danish property, which we gave away for free, because we didn't know it was there.
I believe i can speak for many of us when i say - we are jealous as **** !
Anyway, love and peace, nordic bros

Pic extremely elated

Implying Norway is an Island.

"An island of wealth." The author's using a rhetorical strategy, implying that among the other nations in Europe, Norway is one of the few doing well for itself economically.

Let me try to explain to you how investment works.
You get a million dollars. You buy everything your family wants, and then when money is gone, they can't even get what they need.
Or
You get a million dollars. You invest the money into an investment fund. And you get 10% return. So from that year on, you get 100.000 dollars to spend on your family's needs.

Norway is doing smart thing. Not popular thing, no, but smart. Norway's retirement fund if income and investments keep coming at rate they are now will be completely provided for any percivable future. Most countries in the world already face problem with how to finance their retirement funds.
So no, elderly now don't get everything they could possibly need. But on the other hand when you get to be elderly you don't have to be afraid that you won't get retirement benefits. I do.
