FORCING POOR PLAYERS TO WEAR HELMETS? THAT'S VICTIM BLAMING AND IT CONTRIBUTES TO CONCUSSION CULTURE! INSTEAD OF TEACHING PLAYERS TO WHERE HELMETS, WE SHOULD TEACH CONCUSSIONS NOT TO CONCUSS PLAYERS.

to be fair if they really want to find a way to lower concussions. I believe an effective way to lower them is to find a way to change the materials used for helmets and shoulder pads, while the insides are nice, the exteriors are what's causing the injuries, because both helmets and shoulder pads are covered in plastic, a HARD material. It's like the boxing glove effect, it causes more damage than it protects. In boxing, prior to the gloves, boxing was (you guessed it) bare fisted, but a lot of fists were breaking not to mention skinned, bloodied, among other morbid thoughts, so gloves were added, but as a result of this, facial injuries and brain injuries increased because boxing gloves added surface area to the points of impact. They do more damage than they protect.

It's the same with football equipment, sure they're meant to protect the player, but these players are virtually human missiles, that foam or whatever underneath all that plastic isn't going to protect **** when something hard like plastic is coming at you at full speed (taking into account defensive NFL player size range (aside from DB's) 250lbs.-300+lbs.).

What I'm saying is, we need to find a way to change the material outer covering to something that, even when delivering a hard smashmouth impact, it will hardly hurt the players, especially the heads, a win win in a sense that the game no longer has to be changed just to protect players, and yet at the same time players are for the most part, protected better through better equipment. However, injuries will still happen, especially leg injuries, arms, and even the ribs. Nothing we can do about that really as those will always happen, but if we can protect the heads, then we already have a better chance of staying healthy longer.

Get rid of the helmets, and the players will be forced to stop using their heads to hit people. Then all the "human missiles" will get into better shape in order to tackle properly and play more versatile positions. Soon, the teams will realize that passing forwards is a cheap crutch, and pass backwards now that thy can run for more than 5m. Also stoppages in play will be removed. Suddenly you have the men's version of American football: Rugby.

If you don't have a hard shell, the helmets would get ****** up real quick. Something hard also helps to disperse the energy over a wider area.

My solution would be a helmet similar to juggernaut on X men with a limited swivel attaching the helmet to the shoulders, so they can still rotate their head 90~ degrees in either direction

not necessarily hard, but something that can absorb a lot of impact, while still maintaining shape or at least regaining shape, like nerf or something. Also that something hard is not dispersing the energy, it's focusing it, if it dispersed it, then helmet to helmet shots wouldn't be so devastating and players would be healthy, but they don't, the impact is so focused, they cause concussions despite otherwise.

Meh, I guess my knowledge of mechanics isn't quite enough to be sure of what I'm saying. Plus, you're right about the capacity to absorb energy being the most important in this particular scenario. So I'll concede this to you, it won't change anytime soon regardless of what we say here.

look at rugby. It's about as violent as football but there are far less injuries

because the sports are entirely different. In rugby you're trying to tackle the guy, but you need to get back up quick and keep moving, so you have to save your energy. In football you can just try to knock the ****** out each time since you'll have time to reset.
