That's the idea behind lawns, it was a way to show how rich you were by saying "look, I'm so rich I can afford to have land that has no purpose! no need to farm!"

i see a lot of people throw away so many bottle of water, soda and juice with the cap on when they could pour it down the drain and come back through the tap or throw it out with the cap off so it can evaporate into rain. i mention soda and juice since its mostly water

i thought the idea was outdoor recreation, and art. rich people dont want to walk along muddy fields and in unkempt forest, so they have nice, clean, well tended gardens with nice open space, flat areas to play/ dine, and lots of flowers, flowers were in the past signs of wealth, as the rarer the plant breed the richer you obviouslly were to aquire it.

That's a product of it. They're so wealthy that they don't need that space so they can use it for leisure where people that can't afford to do that need it for farming. the bigger you lawn, the wealthier you looked to others.
