Protip - people who steal aren't doing it because they can't afford food to eat.

Would you like to rephrase that statement or do you wish to stick with a statement like: nobody ever steals food because they are hungry and can't afford to buy it?

Most people who steal aren't doing it because they need to choose between breaking the law or starving to death. Certainly not in first world countries that have things like social protection services/welfare/food stamps/dole.

www.shopliftingprevention.org/whatnaspoffers/NRC/PublicEducStats.htm
The vast majority of shoplifters are "non-professionals" who steal, not out of criminal intent, financial need or greed but as a response to social and personal pressures in their life.

news.ufl.edu/2005/08/10/shoplifters/
the UF study found shoplifters were most commonly between the ages of 35 and 54. These middle-aged adults, most of them gainfully employed, were “primary household shoppers” who occasionally stole to acquire goods whose cost stretched beyond their household budgets.

These aren't people who can't eat.

www.shopliftingprevention.org/whatnaspoffers/nrc.htm
Non-professional shoplifting is rarely about greed or poverty. It's about individuals struggling with personal conflicts and needs. These individuals know right from wrong, they know there are consequences and they often have the money to pay, but they continue to steal anyway. These people often steal items they don't need and sometimes don't use. They usually have the money to pay for the item, rarely plan their theft in advance and never try to sell the item for profit.

People don't steal because they need food. They can get free food if they fill out the papers and are actually poor.

Honestly i can't blame you. most people have made a habit to interpreted text the way they expect it to mean instead of reading it from an objective way.

I don't. It's a wonderful idea, but you rarely see people who cannot feed themselves at a food bank. Usually it's just lazy people who don't WANT to spend money on food.

My opinion is that food should be available to anyone, even if you have money to buy it. we actually have enough food to feed every single human on earth its just not distributed correctly(sourcewww.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm )

if you are considering to get the free food it probably means you are on a low budget which means the food should be available to you as well.

And why should food be given to everyone, exactly? How will farmers get paid?

I have a hard time believing that, simply because I've dealt with these people before. Going to the food bank and getting welfare or something should only be considered a last resort. You know, after you've sold your Ipod and all your jewelry

Here's a mindblowing fact for you; some farmers are paid not to farm, because we have too much food in circulation.

Granted, it is done so that food doesn't become too cheap, but in my opinion, I think it makes more sense for our taxes to just pay farmers for free/cheap food, as opposed to paying our taxes to make sure our food stays expensive.

To be honest, I simply don't know enough about the economy to make an informed judgement of it.

I'm sure there are reasons for it, anyways; the government isn't so stupid as many people believe. Still, it is a bit disheartening to see that, and I hope there's a good explanation behind it.

That's true for just about all of us. I'm probably not well-informed enough either, but seeing as 1/3 of my paycheck goes to Social Security I'm never seeing, I'm not giving the benefit of the doubt.

We're slowly evolving as a species and moving towards a better future, anyone can realize that. just because there are stepbacks to good innovations it doesn't mean we have to stop doing it

for example "HOW WILL MAILMEN GET PAID IF WE ALL USE EMAILS??"
as we evolve the job requirements change and shift into a modern one.

hell there might not even be farmers in the future cause there will be a corporation that farms food via machines. all the wealthy citizens will just pay a miniscule amount of tax to pay for the food corporation that is almost cheap like dirt because it takes absolutely no effort to make anymore.

I know I'm too optimistic but it's still possible to make a better future as long as we don't get too greedy

That's not too optimistic at all, but the problem is that it still puts millions out of work. And nearly free food doesn't exactly justify that.

Besides, if everyone had their needs taken care of and focused only on luxuries, what reason would they have to, well, DO anything? You would only do exactly what you need to with the least amount of work to have your hobbies fulfilled, after-all.

nobody wants people to Do anything
you're implying that we NEED peasants to do low tier jobs
but why? we can have robots and machines doing the job
if we can move forward, we have to
no matter the consequences

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying.

Do you want to build a rocketship?

I mean really, you want to build one right in your workshop? "Well, robots will build it" and give it to you for free? Do you OWN those robots? What happens when other people want to ride your rocketship? Will you even pilot it?

People work because the reward based system is best. They work because they want to afford necessities and luxuries. If they already have needs taken care of, they don't suddenly become artists, engineers, and geniuses, they just have an easier time reaching their luxuries.

This problem is a cultural thing, not a financial thing, and until you realize that you will continue to have flawed arguments that you will never see.

People always have an innate need to feel wanted, if they feel wanted for doing a simple job, they'll do it.

Also when/if we reach Post-Scarcity Civilization Status, we'll be able to travel among the stars, people will be jumping on the nearest ship and going lets go exploran

humans in nature have always been travelling and curious by nature, given the chance to do that again, a lot of them would do it

You and I know different people. That's based more on culture than anything anyways; humans are pack animals, but that doesn't mean we naturally involve ourselves.

Okay.

Well yes, that's good for them. But who would want to build the ship if they didn't have to? And when someone does build one, what happens when other people demand to be let aboard despite not doing a thing to help?

I have been trying to get food stamps for the last 4 months. My wife is disabled and has cancer, I have no job but the ****** pay for being her caretaker, and we still are having a **** time getting help. The food stamp program here is a ******* joke.
On another note, my mother in law gets $12 a month in food stamps for her son.
