well my teacher explained to me that janitors get paid a lot if you've been working for some time
#53 to #49 - gerfox (02/16/2014) [-]
Sure, you get paid decently - but nevertheless, you're in a job with probably no chance of advancement, and you're stuck cleaning up everyone else's mess. Is that really a job you would want?
User avatar #54 to #53 - hanakoikezawa (02/16/2014) [-]
Depends on if that's what I want to do

Going to art school doesn't automatically make you better at art.
It helps though.

Normally when you get an art degree, you dont actually make much money or you dont make any at all. He is saying that the janitor got an art degree so now he must be a janitor.

User avatar #56 to #19 - hecatonchires (02/16/2014) [-]
This isn't creative, this isn't an original work nor is it something new. I wish I could draw like that and It's good, very good even, but that doesn't make it creative.

because artists get ****** over allot..
#13 to #3 - bananazam (02/15/2014) [-]
they dont get ****** over a lot its just not a rare talent anymore. years ago only small amounts of the population had time/money to learn art, now its easy and cheap so thats what your pay will be.
User avatar #14 to #13 - alleksi (02/15/2014) [-]
not necessarily easy or cheap, being an artist is really time consuming and difficult when it comes to practicing said profession, but it's more easily accessible to "plebeians" now, like you said.
That said I still think artists are under-appreciated.

I know it kills the running joke, but if I could continue to create art for the rest of my life but kept a **** job I think I would be content with the life I had. Of course, a cool job would be sweet, too.
I would even pay thousands of dollars and remain in debt for years for the chance of studying art in a tertiary environment. Grey hairs be damned when it comes to paying it back. I think I'm more proud of my growing skills and knowledge of art than I have ever been of anything else. **** becoming a doctor or lawyer actually, I ******* respect the amount of ******** you have to go through to become one . I want to spend my life making things. Even if I have to live in a cardboard box on the street.
User avatar #28 - pokimone (02/15/2014) [-]
Hes a janitor, because as unfourtunate as it is, you can make almost no money doing art unless you know someone, or get lucky. Especially anime, video game, or cartoon art. Don't misunderstand, it takes great talent to draw things like that, but art colleges and institutes will throw out any portfolio with things like that in it. Its not that it doesn't take talent or skill, its just a different skill set, the proportions, shadings, and pretty much everything is entirly different than doing classic or modern artwork. Personally, I love this kind of art and hate that thats the way they do things, but its true.
User avatar #81 to #28 - thegreenmann (02/16/2014) [-]
You can make money being an artist, you just gotta know where to look. For me I'm becoming a medical illustrator
#117 to #81 - John Cena (02/16/2014) [-]
Of course you can. In fact I do (sic!). It's just a lot harder to earn a steady and at the same time high income. Either you do freelance work with a promise of lucrative jobs but at the same time very risky to get by month to month or you agree to do a lot of "technical" and "low level product" oriented stuff (sorry, english =/= mother tongue) which isn't a gold mine so to speak. It's a lot harder to have "financially oriented" career, but it does not mean that it's impossible. There are cases of designers, painters etc. who make a lot and have steady careers, I know a few of them. It's just very hard, takes a ton of determination and talent and in most of the cases thinking your career path through and sticking to the plan. Most of my friends draw/paint/design/film for a living, myself included. Philosophy degree is far better stereotype material than art degree, believe me (not a single cent made thanks to it in a direct sense, 4 years and counting ).
#47 to #28 - John Cena (02/16/2014) [-]
It's not that. They reject it not because of bad/different proportions, etc. They reject it because mostly it's not considered ART but artisanship. It's mostly mechanical reproduction of theme, style etc. Not that it's not impressive. It is and I personally honour people who own such skills. It's just not Art in a strict sense. What they look in candidates is a different skillset: certain creativity, looking at things differently (not reproducing something existing, be that only the style), seeing things not seen by others and having talent interpreting reality not copying it. Taking that into account in some cases you can get in even with manga/cartoon style as long as it's an unique and creative. ( I'm NOT art graduate BTW, but philosophy, I just share the pain of having a refrigirator box for a home)

I'm a Geoscience major, I spend a lot of time working with independent artists on various projects that require an artistic touch. I can't draw to save my life, and without these art majors, I probably would have lost my job by now. I wasn't trying to hate, but it's an observation I've made lately.
User avatar #112 to #110 - crimhowler (02/16/2014) [-]
Thank you for defending, but in all honesty, it is a hard industry to get into. A lot of artists Don't get into what they want.
