I really want to say "don't hate the player hate the game" but I'm going to say technically they are playing the game just not the same way you are used to playing. To me if they are having fun playing the game then they count as a gamer.

I mean yeah, a good portion fall into that category...but a lot of games aren't even purely enjoyment anymore, they're just time sinks (a lot of mobile games). And a majority of such games run of these micro-transaction type deals that have become the norm. I guess we all enjoy games in our own ways, but paying to progress/win doesn't seem like it follows the gaming spirit (or the primary purpose of gaming).

And I guess my definition of a "gamer" is a little different, as I like to put in the concept of passion with my definition of true gaming.

Mobile games understand that they are timesinks they know that they can't compete with other gaming platforms but they have something other platforms don't have which is mobility. They know that most people have their smart phones with them but don't carry gaming platforms so that's their niche. They exploit that niche by producing games that are a bit more forgiving in quality since the user will not be playing it in big gaps of times but will little time spread throughout the day. Understanding that they are timesinks they know that the user of the game will not have time on their side so by giving them a chance to buy progress they can make profits.

I think our views on what timesinks means are different. I believe that all games are time sinks but they are enjoyable time sinks. Sure they differ from the level of enjoyment and how they deliver but video games were made to have fun on those boring hours people have.

As a 14 Year old, this is sadly quite true amongst my social circle: Especially within the sub-group that play Fifa an excessive amount, they simply buy their way into a good Ultimate Team. It's worrying, because the major players in the industry are noticing and profiting. Look at a lot of recent games and you'll see the evidence of this, like Dead Space 3.

MFW when I don't even have a smartphone to play mobile games on and everyone is spending 100's of dollars on them.

Although there are some beacons of hope, smarter ones whom have some semblance of intelligence. Myself not included, otherwise I would be off studying or some other ****, instead of being on FJ at 3am.

i'm 14 as well and god this is so accurate. i've played dark souls through like 5 times and just beat the final story boss in dark souls 2. the thought of being able to buy more souls just hurts to think about. my little cousin wanted to play dark souls 2 last week and asked if he could borrow some money to "unlock all the stats and items and stuff"

he is no longer allowed to touch my xbox or speak to me about video games. this is why i ******* hate mobile games. they all have that .99 cent in app purchase to make the game easy. kids that age shouldn't even HAVE smartphones let alone be allowed to constantly buy in app stuff. they should be given a console if anything. i would say pc but you know. younger kids tend to not be able to into pc gaming if i ever have a child i won't get them a ****** mobile device. console for them. hell a console would be a lot cheaper if you ask me. first video game would be pokemon.

As a 19 year old decrepit geezer, I can guarantee that the best way to ruin the game is to provide a shortcut to souls. I downloaded CheatEngine and just gave myself billions of souls, maxed out my level in under a minute. It ruins the game so ******* much it isn't even funny. I'm still a bit pissed at the guy who told me to try it, but more so at myself for giving in.

13 year old faggot here
I haven't really noticed much about pay to progress and smartphone games and the like around here, since it's mostly all FPS that's ever talked about. Titanfall and Halo and CoD (although that's actually starting to become less popular).
The only times I've seen the whole pay to progress thing is in smartphone and EA games. I think that says enough about EA as a whole. I also think we're still okay for some years.

As a fellow 14 year old, I can confirm. Although, my friends and I have all been growing up with gaming, so we all actually hate microtransactions with a passion and think that they are the spawn of satan. We grew up on GameCube and PS2, but whenever we see someone else our age who thinks they can just Pay2Win, we cringe. We honestly went into a gamestop one time and someone around our age was asking about Super Mario 3D World on the App store and what powerups you can get. We felt sorry for the employee who was asked the question, we could visibly see that he was about to choke a bitch.

I actually see a few people my age "breaking the stereotype". It's true that there are an absurd amount of people who think that when they pay $200 for top player IN THEIR CLASS, that they automatically think they are an "UBER MLG HAXORZ GAMER". God, i hate to call them gamers when they only play tablet games. I try to tell people in my school please don't go tumblr caps on me here, but at my school it is required that you have an ipad (i know, i know. Just..put the knife down). We can't bring phones or any other tablets. (i don't have a phone myself...but that logic is something i would expect from our classes special need child) . It really makes me sad that mobile games are most likely going to destroy the majority of the games that are released within the near future. I just hope it doesn't somehow leak into VR...kinda like that one futurama episode.

Trust me, it gets so much worse than that. I'm 14 myself and i cringe at school at least 5 times a day. (I'm prepared for caps due to what im about to say) our school has a rule that you must take an ipad to school. It cant be any other tablets or even a phone. so we can bring ipads but not phones? i don't have a phone myself but god damn does their logic piss me off anyway, back to the story. Every single god.damn.*******.day you hear at least 5 different people complaining. It usually goes something like this "OH MY GOSH. I CANT BAUY THE NEWWW CALL OF SNIPERS IV RETURN OF VENGANCE GENERIC COOL SOUNDING WORD!!!!!!. MY MUM IS SUCH A ******* FAGGOT. SHE BOUIGHTTT ME DIS $400 DOLLAR ANGREE BIRDS MACHINE AND CANT GET ME FLAPPE FISH SLPISHY FLAPPY BIRD GAME". I honestly think that mobile games are going to ruin the entirety of the gaming industry for everyone else. Perhaps a few companies won't give in to this ********, god knows sony and microsoft are, god also knows that we're going to forever have the Playstation and Xbox consoles because of these moronic 8 year olds thinking that console gaming is superior to pc not trying to cause a ********* here, but just check out the facts about the graphics and how much customization you can put into a PC. I enjoy both all 3 and understand that consoles are better for those who dont have as much time. .

I agree with you on some points, and disagree on others. Yeah, your generation seems pretty cancerous. But as for gaming, consoles don't survive because of games like CoD or w/e. They survive because of exclusive titles that are impossible to emulate on PC. That is literally the only thing that holds consoles in the business still.

First of all, what kind of school forces people to buy Ipad's? I would have searched for a another school.
And secondly I feel sorry for you having classmates like that, I have a nephew that is 5 years old and he had already earlier a smartphone than I did. The only thing what he is doing with it, is just playing games and buying stuff from the money of his parents.
It did make me pretty much cringe, since he could have more fun with a nintendo DS and do the same thing (it's even cheaper in the long term).
I just had abandoned my oldschool Nokia, because I was basically living under a rock if I couldn't catch up with friends on whatsapp. Otherwise I would never have bought a smartphone though, I mean I only use a phone to call people or texting in the past. If I wanted to internet, I did just use a computer. It wasnt really something that was missing out in my life.
Ah well, I wish you luck though, consider yourself lucky that you aren't brainwashed by the corporate companies who are earning money on short sighted people like your classmates.

It doesn't harm anybody, well except when you're trading **** that's worth a ******* of cash and get scammed, but that's the risk of that business, but in general it just makes everyone win, general player gets **** for free which he can keep or trade around or sell for real cash to buy other games on Steam.

Glad to be of service, also, love your House gifs.

Also, it actually to some degree helps the competitive scene. At the International last year, they added an item to the store, cost like ten bucks, it came with some shaz, allowed you to try and predict who'd win and stuff but it gave you cosmetic items, you got a ******* of value for those ten bucks.

Buuut... Valve took 2.5 dollars for every item sold and added it to the prize pool of the tournament for the professional teams, resulting in.. I think it was a bit over a million dollars getting added to the pool.

Other smaller tournaments have been seen to try a same sort of thing, buy our ticket, get a HUD and a item set along that gets styles unlocked the more games of the tournament you watch.

Everybody profits.
Glad to be of service, also, love your House gifs.

But I also love him in Blackadder and well, just about everything with him and Stephen Fry.

Yeah, I'm working through the seasons myself. Just finished season three and I've been hooked since season one.

no but for real, he had a supervisor who had obviously played the game before, and due to the fact that he was only 11, the other dude should have informed him that the throwing knves are inferior to the arrows. So again, why was he buying poison throwing knves?

Check yourself brah. Poison knives are way better for 1v1 PvP. You can toss them instantly without having to pull a bow out of your ass and take aim.

My first char was a thief, so I used both poison arrows and poison knives, I'm not saying arrows suck or anything, but knives have their purpose.

but you probably wont be playing PvP until you've completed your first playthrough (and if you do you'll get your ass kicked) which this kid obviously had not

Haven't even completed a playthrough yet, and am pretty ballin at PvP... But that's probably because I jumped into it right away and kept at it until I stopped getting my ass handed to me.

But anyways my point still stands that arrows aren't strictly better, so why all the throwing knife hate?

Do you play PC?

I think the point where arrows take a major lead is that they scale (well the bow scales but you know what I mean) where as the throwing knives has no scaling. Also a bow can be aimed manually from much further away.

Dark souls is my first experience with a non casual game so I feel more safe in PvP if I have some decent gear due to the fact that I still can't outplay the majority of players.

And yes, but I play DS on my PS3

Usually if you're dealing with poison, you're aim is straight up just to poison them, and in that regard a quick toss is better then taking aim with a bow. Fire arrows and et cetera are better for straight up long range damage.

What do you mean by that? After playing that game, I don't even know what I consider casual and non-casul anymore.

Oh, well that's what I was asking.

I see your point but still personally prefer arrows

What I think of as a casual game is one that you can play to the end without ever running into a challenge you need to work to overcome

played loads of different games, when I was younger I got really frustrated when I couldn't progress in a game and would stop playing. So I just kind of played easy games and kept doing it woithout ever trying out games that where too difficult beause I thought I wouldn't enjoy it, up until last christmas when I got dark souls.

AC Brotherhood/revalations
Oblivion/skyrim
gta VC - 5
DMC 3-6
CS
Portal / 2
Prototype / 2
L4D / 2 (and just a bunch of zombie games)
Burnout: takedown/revenge
Mass effect 1-3
Crysis 2
Amnesia TDD

& oldschool classics

Spyro, Super Mario, Pokemon, Tekken, mortal combat, DBZ budokai and stuff like that

(played and completed games)

Well then I don't think your definition is very good. Just a few examples, Portal 1/2 are puzzle games, so you have to overcome challenges to get through it.. And Amnesia TDD?!? Playing that game for more than 10 minutes is a challenge in itself! (Also has puzzles and whatnot.)

I'm fairly good with puzzles so I never found portal that diffucult, and the game itself has to be hard, not be hard to play because it's scary

look man, I'm not trying to say that Dark souls is the HARDESTEST GAME EVUR DERR! But you CANNOT be so elitist that you will call Dark Souls a casual game, because it is ******* not.

Maybe because the 'supervisor' wanted to let the kid enjoy himself and do what he wanted, instead of being an elitist cunt about it?

because geing stuck in a game with **** tier gear unable to progress because you wasted resources picking up something you wont need is ******* fun right? and of course an easily avoidable mistake because 11 year olds are perfectly capable of taking on a game with an insanely high learning curve for beginners with no help at all right? Always making the right decisions and use logic to find the harder answers?

I mean, Jesus ******* christ, if you truly think that pointing a new player in the right direction is being an eletist cunt, then I will tell you this.

YOU are a cunt.

I never said there's anything wrong with pointing someone in the right direction, but if you think it's someone's responsibility to tell a kid that he's playing the game wrong, THEN you're a cunt. Maybe the supervisor didn't even know that poison knives are apparently so bad they serve no purpose in the game whatsoever, maybe he was under the assumption that if there's a piece of equipment in a game, then it would be reasonable to try to use said equipment?

you make my words sound very dictator like, I'm not saying the dude has a responsibility to tell the kid he's playing the game wrong. But give him useful pointers if he's about to make a mistake. I've already displayed my opinion of said equipment in my ealier comments, and that poison throwing knives are not useful in PvE early game (or even that much mid-late game) but used in PvP which requires a high skillcap to participate in. That much should appear logical to the majority of DS players
