It's really long, and has a pretty weird premise. The basics is that four kids get together and play a video-game that starts out like The Sims, but things quickly become more complicated when one of them discovers a meteor is heading for his house. Now the four heroes have to escape their doom using this mysterious game, discovering that they are actually predestined to wage war in an alternate universe, the meteor simply acting as an agent to hasten their entry into the REAL game. They must befriend minions, defeat enemies, and rise to the God Tiers before defeating the Victorious King so that they can claim the Ultimate Prize. At least, that's what was supposed to happen. Unfortunately, some...things are interfering with the Game from the outside, and only the four kids, their new-found friends and a little dude who REALLY likes Democracy have any hope of stopping them. I like it alot.

An alternative, non-spoiler explanation for you. As mentioned before, there are a lot of external influences affecting the game our heroes play. The trolls are one of these. 12 individuals based on the zodiacs contact the four heroes at various points before and during their Destiny-Bound game, usually aggressive or confrontational in nature, with the aim of causing emotional distress (hence they "Troll" the four heroes)

They are aliens with a culture that is pretty violent, with 11 separate casts (each marked by a unique blood color) that denotes who gets to boss around who. Red/Orange are little better than animals/slaves, green is middle class, Blue are "blue-blooded" royalty, and purple are running the show. If you are higher on the caste than the person you are talking to, you can do anything you want and get away with it by law.

At some point in the story, we stopped following the four heroes adventures to focus solely on what the trolls where doing/had done. This was where we learned the most about them.

There are 11 castes, but 12 trolls. The 12th is the special snowflake, born with a blood color the cast has never seen before. He is the main character of the trolls for a good while, and is still a really popular character.

Troll culture has each individual unaware of their true parents. They are raised by an animal at first, who they then learn to take care of as they grow older (if they make it that long.) Instead, each troll can try and search for an ANCESTOR. This is a troll who was like you in a lot of ways, and you're supposed to be sort of a reincarnated version of them. Its encouraged to finish their business and live life like they did. Each of our twelve trolls has an ancestor, and we get to meet kid versions of them later, making for a total cast of 24 trolls.

Crap. Due to too many line breaks I had to cut out the part where I described each character individually and why the color of their blood matters. I lost it and don't want to retype it. Sorry.

Basically the global civilization of their planet has sorted them up by blood type, enslaved most blood types, banished all adults to space war so no more rebellions could happen, the troll kids play the Sburb game and create Earth. Just before they do a semi-omnipotent knife-crazy madman is teleported there by mistake because of the world they created also existing at the same time. The trolls escape to a lone meteoroid where they pester the kids via text chat and have conversations with them out of chronological order.

If you respond with a specific question I'll answer it. They're basically aliens who have horns and different social manners and customs.

I'll make it short. The trolls are aliens. There are twelve of them originally and they have their alternate previous versions and their historic history versions. They have four ways of romance, each represented by the symbol on decks of cards (hearts, clubs, spades, diamond).

When the trolls began the author, Hussie, stopped working off of fan input and began crafting his own story. It gets really confusing, complicatedly intertwined, and I actually stopped reading in order to make a chart to keep track of what happened to each character.

Also when a Sburb player dies (aka every main character) they continue to exist as a ghost in "dream bubbles". These dream bubbles are tied to deep space and were made by the ancient Cthulhu gods. Since there are many possible actions someone might take and only one can work out in the end the best (the "alpha timeline") there exist thousands of ghost clones who went through different realities.

Also there are literal retcons that are literally a part of the plot.

Homestuck as a whole is a pretty good read and makes great use of the internet as a medium. Every page is a gif and sometimes flash pages add music, interactivity, and/or short movies. It's pretty freaking big > readmspa.org/stats/ < "Homestuck is about 256% the size of the Lord of the Rings, 159% the size of the King James Bible, 114% the size of the Harry Potter series, or 70% the size of A Song Of Ice And Fire (the five books so far) " and begins slowly with lots of humor.

Feel free to ignore the fanbase as it's a real mixed bag. Some people only step into it to ask questions about stuff that confused them. If you want I could link you to an interesting part of the story that you could test the waters with.
