Traded one bird for another. I wonder if they'll ever reach a mammal.

ducks and birds are mammals aren't they?

no, the term mammal refers to a group of organisms that are endotherms (warm blooded), tetrapods (4 limbs and a backbone), have hair, and in females have mammary glands.

while ducks and birds are tetrapods, they are not endotherms since they fly south for the winter, they do not have hair (feathers) and the females do not have mammary glands (the young feeds off the yolk of the egg, not the milk of the mother)

there you have it

thank you for that, i thought just about anything that wasn't a fish was a mammal, we didn't really cover that in biology.

now I'm confused, are they mammals? or not?

no they are not mammals, because they still do not have hair and do not nurse their young

I just meant they are warm blooded, because before I said they weren't but was wrong about that.
Sorry about the confusion!

ok, that cleared it up, thanks again, my biology teacher was obsessed with plants and stuff so the entire year was about plants and not about animals and stuff, we had to dissect plants, not even frogs or anything cool, it sucked!

it was interesting don't get me wrong, but i'd rather dissect a frog or cat than a pea pod.

EXACTLY! and she wanted these detailed art drawings labelling each and every part of it and it was so tough to not break or crush the stuff.

hey, when I did it, my teacher wanted me to take each piece and tape it to a page in my notebook, then label it
I was essentially taking apart a creature and pinning up each one of its parts for display.. I felt pretty weird about the whole thing

I'd expect you'll get to the larger dissections at some point though
