The only show I've watched for 8 hours straight on netflix was Lost. That show was great.

Companies could be using metrics in a lot of better ways, but they are more interested in doing this "internet of things" than collecting and using data better. Netflix could have something like a "people with similar viewing habits as yours." You could anonymously message them and maybe you connect. Who knows, maybe you find your future ex wife, maybe you save somebodies life.

that would not work

I could see this happening, netflix is already the best at using data in my opinion as it's predictions for what I might like are correct more than 25% of the time, which is damn good compared to other sites. If you got all the legal stuff out of the way and got past the initial wariness people would have of the idea it could work.

Frankly, Netflix needs to worry about getting a way to hide stuff you've already seen before it starts worrying about matching it's customers...

they also need to fix their recommendation algorithm
i love firefly but watched it outside of netflix so i decided to give it 5 stars in nexflix so that they would recommend similar things, the first thing it recommended after i did this was firefly

Suggesting potential mates based on ones you've previously expressed interest in? Maybe, maybe it could work.

No, wait. The fact that you're looking for more people implies you weren't satisfied with the last one. Thus suggesting ones based on the one that didn't work will give you more of the same problem.

a lot of people are happy just being in a relationship. even if it fails eventually, even if they know it's doomed to fail, having someone for a time can still be worth it

I think it'd be a good feature, but like most things based on preferences, it wouldn't take long for things to turn into arguments. XY has recently watched Breaking Bad Season 4 and 5 as have you. You loved it, the other person hated the last season. So begins, the Opinion War.

To be fair, no one would watch all the way to season 5 if they don't like the show. Also, season 5 is one of the (if not the) most highly rated TV season of all time, so if you don't like it, you're clearly not human.
User avatar #37 to #16 - samalicious (06/06/2014) [-]
I liked season 5 but it's a bit melodramatic to say you're not human if you didn't like it.

Naw netflix would never do it, because if they matched people up they'd stop being forever alone and watching netflix all day. Its best consumers are the people who have nothing to do but watch netflix all day, so why would they want to change them

netflix makes its money from subscriptions not ads so implementing a dating service feature would lighten server load as the forever alones paired off but it would not decrees their income because no one is going to cancel their subscription just because they got a girlfriend/boyfriend

soon after nexflix dating, google dating comes out making recommendations on search habits most google dating pop ups look something like "here are 3 other local singles who search for 'midgets being ****** by horses'" this every one uncomfortable with the exception of furies who are just happy to meet other furies

If you're watching Grey's Anatomy for eight hours, it would exactly be straight.
