I don't believe this story. I did at first, but as a math student, I was very curious what equation he actually solved. I cannot seem to find an answer to this, all I can actually find is that the problem he solved was 30 years old. For as big of a deal as this would be in the math world, there is no documentation of it. The more I think about it, it doesn't make sense to say a math equation was unsolved for 30 years. Equations are what mathematicians solve, they prove things. The closest thing to solving an equation is studying partial differential equations.

Moreover, he is not listed under famous Alumni in the universities page [0]. Looking up "First class degree tokai university" only returns stories about him, and all the stories say the same thing. None of them are particularly reputable.

If anyone can prove me wrong, please do. I REALLY want to read more about the equation he solved.

#136 to #43 - anon (06/02/2015) [-]
PDE's is just a small subset in all the equations of mathematics. Equations being solved means finding non-trivial solutions. The general schrodinger equation hasn't been solved yet, that's existed for about 80 years now, not to mention many other equations.

You gave me an example of a differential equation. What are some examples of unsolved equations that aren't diffy q's (I'm legitimately curious)

Small correction, I meant to say "Equations aren't what mathematicians solve"
Clarification: In general, mathematicians don't really look at individual equations, unless they're very abstract. An example of an equation that might interest 17th century mathematicians is ax + by = d, when a,b,d,c,y are all integers. Modern mathematics, however, is all about proving certain properties. Look at the millenium questions as an example.
#75 to #43 - anon (06/01/2015) [-]
Damn, really? I'm pretty bummed cause I wanted this to be true. I'll try looking myself, maybe there's some strange journal somewhere that has it. I guess Abraham Lincoln was right: you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

www.bellanaija.com/2015/05/21/nigerian-student-ufot-ekong-breaks-30-year-academic-record-at-japanese-university/

these seem like a reputable news station's website and a site that's reporting it but isn't a blog. Those photos seem quite difficult to fake lol.

I can't find anything about the math equation though I, too, am a mathematician that would like to know more. Media in general is awful at reporting on the maths and sciences though.

User avatar #87 to #81 - srskate ONLINE (06/01/2015) [-]
You raise good points. It's more accurate for me to say that I believe some aspects of this story are not true. Like, that guy in the picture most likely did actually graduate from a Japanese University n such, but I feel like this is an example of a smaller news or other similar site reporting something, embellishing the details, and then everyone else runs with it.
#95 to #87 - rollfourexplain (06/01/2015) [-]
**rollfourexplain used "*roll 1, 0000-9999*"**
**rollfourexplain rolls 0,386**

Part of the problem could be that the problem was written in Japanese or is mostly available on Japanese websites. Google also filters search results by your location.
#122 to #95 - anon (06/01/2015) [-]
Still, it seems like four out of five stories originating around India or Nigeria are so totally embellished it's silly. "11 year old prodigy proves Einstein wrong!" and things like that

Finally, someone who enjoys math.... just recently read about this guy --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yitang_Zhang

He worked at Subway, and in his spare time, proved that there were bounded gaps between primes (the gap between 2 and 3 is zero, the gap between 11 and 13 is one, the gap between 61 and 67 is six, etc.) The gap happens to be 70,000,000 and might be a big step toward finding out whether or not there are infinite prime numbers. ******* badass.

You might like these too, I made them a while back.

I forgot to reply to this, so I'm sorry for that.

Thank you so much for linking me to that guy. I heard about prime gaps previously, and I was very curious about them because I initially misunderstood them. Now this is MUCH more clear.
Side note: did you mean infinite twin primes? Because we already have a proof of infinite primes.
#236 to #235 - disasterbater (06/04/2015) [-]
i dont know why i said that, i think i meant to say there was no equation to identify all successive prime numbers. and i have heard the twin primes issue as well. Send me any links you find interesting, im always open to knew math sources/debates/etc.!

Yeah, but we don't say the word ****** out of racism. We say it, because it's the internet and someone has to at someone point or another blurt it out. In fact, we rarely crack racist jokes out or racism. We crack them because they're funny. The only time the site is genuinely racist and hateful is during race riots, in which case everyone turns into a middleages asian shop owner.

Actually the definition for ****** is "a contemptuous term for a black or dark-skinned person.", it has nothing to do with ignorance. Although, still 'contemptuous' so still very negative.
