Those statues are actually lifeforms that can only move when no one can see them, they are also ridiculously fast making flashing lights and blinking a very bad idea when near them. So imagine knowing that and having to put them in a room and closing the light. Doesn't seem like something fun to do.

They don't have a specific distance they travel, from what I remember they move very fast. Maybe they do move fast enough to cover 20 feet by the time you blink but i'm not sure.

I honestly don't think they're that creepy. Ya, I know the whole "they're comin' to getcha!" thing when you don't look at them, but still they're just not that creepy.
