Honestly, the whole entire greek mytholigy thing was a huge dissapointment to me the first time I actually read about it. My basis on it before reading came from the Disney Hercules movie, which I loved and still do. Then i find out about blood feuds, inter-sexual relations, rape, skewed senses of morality and heroism and what have you. I'm sure Greek mytholigy is interesting by itself to a lot of people, but imagine going from the disney version to the mytholigy itself. It was kinda shocking.

Really interesting point of perception. I never liked disney as a child and was rather fascinated by real Mythology, thus making those movies for me just... kind of wrong and silly. I was shocked too, however in a different way. It could be compared with first reading an epic book, then watching a goofy cartoon musical version of it.

Actually, the Roman story of Hercules is an adaptation of the Greek story of Heracles. General rule of thumb for Roman history is if you're not sure where something came from, just assume it was the Greeks.

I kinda figured all ancient roman belief/mythology was essentially just the ancient greek stuff with a different naming scheme.

Most of it is. Some of it, particularly their cult of Caesar and the mythology surrounding the founders of rome, is Roman.

Really? I love it. I find it fascinating for one, and hilarious for another. Like the fact that almost all of the monsters are a result of one of the Gods ******* an animal, and that was for some reason totally cool with the Greeks, that the people they worshiped practiced bestiality, and an incredible amount of incest.

That's most disney movies though, when I found out how the Hunchback of Notre Dame actually ends in the book, like damn

Exactly, that's another horrible realization. Alladin was pretty close to the raw material though, with a Disney twist so that was very cool. But imagine all of the fairy tale ones. That said, nothing was really quite as polarizing to me as Hercules and its raw material.

Weird. I took a class in Greek Mythology before I saw Disney's Hercules (actually saw it as an end-of-the-year kickback for the class) and read the Hunchback of Notre Dame before learning how to Disney version went (still haven't seen it, I feel like I'm too old for it now)

In mythology he's usually the least dickish of all the Gods, he's a villain in so many modern stories because of his connection with death and death being seen as evil. Even though he's not even the God of death, he's the God of the underworld. The closest thing to a God of death is Thanatos (Thanos from Marvel comics gets his name from him) who's not even a God in all the stories, more of a spirit type thing.

He's a good guy, but he's bitter because while his brothers got the sea and literally everything except the underworld and the sea, he got to sit in a hole with dead assholes for eternity. Aside from some demi goddess at some point, whose name I forget.
