There used to be a homeless veteran I knew who was always selling newspapers, day after day, even in the rain. We'd always buy a couple from him, enough for him to buy his own little cellphone. Eventually, he learned he had cancer, and would go to the VA for treatment every so often, even while living under the bridge.
He was gone for a couple of weeks before returning, he'd gotten robbed and stabbed, losing what little he had. He tried selling for another month, before I never saw him again.

Whoa, we can't help homeless veterans! That'd be social welfare! Yes, this is sarcasm.

Please realize that a lot of the people you see on the side of the road claiming that they're veterans, aren't. Those people claim they can't get jobs, but there are ALWAYS jobs open to vets. It's not hard to find them, even for the grunts with just a GED. Why? Actual time in the military provides valuable work experience. Now, there are some veterans on the street, some may have psychological disorders or may be truly handicapped. However, most any able-bodied man who claims to be a vet that can't get a job, probably isn't.

You take care of your people there, I think is a relevant note.

Can someone explain to me why veterans can't get jobs. As a non-american id ont see why this phenomenon exists, wouldn't you want to hire veterans?

I'm gonna be that guy and throw it out there that serving in the military does not disqualify you from seeking and acquiring gainful employment. In fact, there are plenty of programs in place to help with that. If you have PTSD and don't want to work or find yourself incapable of doing so, then that's something you have to figure out for yourself. There are plenty of types of work that can be therapeutic like working with your hands etc.. As far as being disabled, the government usually pays out disability benefits for combat vets. There is a guy in my friend's reserve unit who was using an oxy-acetylene cutting torch on the job and a chunk of molten slag fell on his thigh and burned to the bone, partially disabling him. They discharged him and are paying him active duty pay at his paygrade for life..
