Chocolate isn't actually that poisonous to dogs.  It's the theobromine that's poisonous, and different dogs have vastly different tolerances, as well as different chocolates having varied amounts of it (baker's chocolate and dark chocolate tend to have the most.)  I mean, it's still a bad idea to give a dog chocolate; it's a risk you don't really want to take.  But it's not the instant, guaranteed dog-killer that myths would have you believe it is.   
   
Styrofoam, on the other hands, is bad because it swells in the stomach and tends to very easily block the intestines.  Especially in smaller breeds.
