its the moment when he talked about his mother sitting outside his room trying to console him, good god i cant imagine how much this whole thing would have split the family.

That one made me more than a little upset. I can't imagine his parents having done anything so wrong to deserve such garbage offspring.

The statement that men have held authority over the household for the "vast majority" of history is largely false. Most ancient societies were largely matriarchal in nature, throughout Europe and Africa especially. Even though men are seen and depicted as the "heads" in imagery from those times, it was always the eldest female that a village would turn to for advice and leadership, and the eldest male would enact that guidance.
User avatar #19 to #6 - GIJorge (12/01/2015) [-]
Give me a single example of a matriarchal society, then.
Matrilinear=/=matriarchal
#42 to #19 - kaimera (12/01/2015) [-]
The vikings.

The wife was in charge of the property and money, and made all of the decisions at home.
Women were also thought to be magic, and so the men respected them all deeply.

The men were in charge of everything outside their homes, like traiding, farming, pillaging etc.
User avatar #53 to #42 - GIJorge (12/01/2015) [-]
Nope, men still held the power. Women did have a lot of rights, but calling the Vikings a matriarchy makes 0 sense
#56 to #53 - kaimera (12/02/2015) [-]
The women were in charge of money, and could even choose to divorce her husband and shame him forever.

If they weren't a matriarchy then they were pretty damn close.
User avatar #47 to #42 - brobathehutt (12/01/2015) [-]
Which is why they went around raping women in villages right?
#55 to #47 - kaimera (12/02/2015) [-]
They actually didn't do much of that, but they did kidnap their wives from other villages, the women were treated so well by their captors that they didn't want to leave.
User avatar #57 to #55 - brobathehutt (12/02/2015) [-]
So men respected them so deeply that they would kidnap them from their homes? That they would rape them? That's not a ******* matriarchy bro it's not even close.
#58 to #57 - kaimera (12/03/2015) [-]
Again, they didn't rape women as often as people think. Sure, it happened. But it has happened in every society.
User avatar #59 to #58 - brobathehutt (12/03/2015) [-]
Again they ******* kidnapped them from villages that isn't what a matriarchy is, for that matter the women weren't in charge of the society itself
User avatar #37 to #19 - SuperCollider (12/01/2015) [-]
This is probably the most well known example of a matriarchal society in the world today:

Sorry, but the Mosuo are a matrilinear society (you could argue that they do have aspects of matriarchy, but at most they could be considered a mix up of both). They are presented as matriarchal for the same reason that little "African statuettes" are made the way they are made: it's good for commerce and tourism
User avatar #54 to #52 - SuperCollider (12/02/2015) [-]
How are you defining "matriarchal", whats the criteria you're going by? Because the Mosuo actually define themselves as a matriarchal society. That they reckon kinship through the female line (matrilineality) only serves to underscore the fact that women are the household heads and hold economic authority in their families. Polyandry (one women having multiple husbands) is also very common among the Mosuo and women rarely choose to let their husbands settle in their households, which again, hold familial and economic authority.

>reminds me of this guy I knew in theater class
>He was around 28 i believe, tall, thick, glasses, and a nearly shaved head with a scruffy beard
> Always cracking jokes that no one understood
> > Claimed that he did voice over work or that was his goal
>"Yha im the guy they would call to voice stewie if Seth McFarland was sick or something" then he proceeded to do a really horrible British accent.
>He did the accent all the time saying
>He tried to ask on of my friends out, She claimed she was a lesbian when he asked her if she liked him, he then asked "well if you where not would you like me? like would you find me attractive?" "If you change you mind let me know ok?"
>He also asked my other friend if she wanted to just hang out, She was 18 and defiantly looked young, feeling the creep vibe she said no I forget what excuse she came up with
>When doing monologues he constantly stumbled over his lines, even when one of the projects was to write you own he forgot.
>Constantly made bad flirting attempts with all the girls, I always suck pretty close to this dude I had a crush on to kinda give off an unavailable signal, he still tried.
> He constantly butted into other peoples conversations and even a photo i took of just my friends in the class has him squished in there.
> I hope this guy realized and gained some social etiquette.

To be fair, in my state someone can be fired for being fat or gay. There's no law against firing people in south carolina.
User avatar #41 to #40 - fuccthedevil (12/01/2015) [-]
They just have to say "The law says I don't need a reason to fire them." And they're off the hook.
