i remember a similar feel from being a kid. every SINGLE time my parents would come to pick me up from a friends house...
> parent (usually mom) arrives
>tells me and friend to stop what we are doing and get ready to go
>mom starts talking to friends mom
>20 min later
>"mom, can we go im..."
>"were just about to leave stop being rude"
>30 more minutes of parents talking
>turn nintendo back on
>"damnit i said were leaving turn that off"
>finally start walking to car
>20 minute conversation ensues in front yard
>finally in the car
>after another 10-15 minutes of goodbyes we are finally en route home

and so help me god if we had to go back for something the whole process is repeated

I discovered that starting to do something that takes a lot of time causes things to happen.

My single mom would have my sister and I stay at grandma's house while she worked. When she got off she'd talk with grandma over a glass of wine for hours. If I started up a game on grandma's computer than within 2 minutes it would be time to go.

These patters work for other things.
Waiting for someone to show up at my house? Boot up the ps3 and, boom, they're there.
Waiting for dad to show up at the airport from his flight? Flip open my 3DS and there he is.

I swear my mom uses her own units of measurement when it comes to time. Know this feel all too well.
