You need to get your relationship to him to 100% to be able to customize him.
You'll find the customization in your iDroid menu under "Motherbase" when you are sitting in the helicopter.
But real talk, ultimately it's about playstyle. If you want to do stealth, D walker is awful. If you get so pissed at a mission that you want literally everything in it to die, D walker is for you.
there's plenty of other things to spend GMP on. FOB's, base upgrades, new weapons. Fully upgraded D walker can cost more than the mission reward, and kojima himself has stated that if you have the riot shield on when you get in D walker you are completely invincible against anything short of rocket launchers and tank rounds.
Before A Quiet Exit made me rip my dick off in frustration and delete my Phantom Pain data, I had 3 loadouts, I had my standard Lethal loadout, with everything lethal and silent (Except the Bionic Arm because I didn't have the Blast Arm), a Non-Lethal loadout, with everything silent except the NL Un-Arc primary, and my " ******** up" Loadout, which was the RASP Slug with the Sawn Off Grip, the GROM rocket launcher, and a Wind Urger LB.
But, again, when I reached "A Quiet Exit" it was so dick-rippingly frustrating, on two fronts, one front because the Tanks were better snipers than Quiet and because I couldn't quit the mission.
Actually, you should have a third reason, being that the snake at the end had the magical ability to pierce ******* ballistic plating, because I assume 9 out of 10 people were wearing battle dress for that *********** mission
Ah yes, but they always were like that, I remember first time I got to that mission with the two tanks and the truck in Afghanistan, I was not prepared for how tough and accurate those ******* would be, thank god later missions I had cargo and EMN mine
I failed that mission so much that I got down to the "Lil' Chick" hat, where people wouldn't see you at all, and I still got my ass chopped off and served to me well done.
D Walker is pretty good for when you need to go loud or need to move real fast chasing targets or taking out gunships, or tanks, or going loud or real fast infiltration.
He's good at just about everything
While others may be better in a specific area, he's the jack of all trades
And I love him for it I am also damn good at fast infiltration
And why is that?
D-Walker is by far the most versatile buddy in the game, capable of filling any role with the simple swap of a loadout
If you have the GMP, there is literally no reason to not use him.
D-dog could easily fill any role as well. he can fulton extract I've used him several times to take out two people at once so I could enter through a gate (he attacks the guy on the left I tranq the guy on the right) not to mention D-walker is a heartless robot with an admittably adorable nerdy voice while D-dog ******* loves you bro. You're the legendary big boss in his eyes but to d-walker you're just "user"
I can fulton people from range via launching a fulton device onto them, have D-Walker turn into a moving sentry gun, allowing him to take all the fire while I take out the targets that he misses
I do feel like D-Walker should have some sort of AI to make him something other than just a custom walker gear, but over all I feel that he's still the most useful and fun buddy out of the bunch
I don't know I feel like in all the times I've used D-walker (I fully maxed everything on his developement list because I dunno I just did for all the buddies) that he was kinda unenjoyable while the other buddies led to like more advanced tactics and a more fun experience D-walker just kinda let me walk through things unscathed completely skipping out on the challenge of playing a game. it's like doing that luigi thing in the super mario bros games where if you die you can just have ghost luigi run the sequence for you and collect a half win
He's best used as a buddy for when you just want to **** around
The others lead to more advanced tactics, yes, but the tactics in MGSV aren't really the best to begin with
Ultimately it all comes down to how you view the game and how you want to play.
I personally enjoy being a jack of all trades, so D-Walker was more or less made for me.
So if I've never played a single MGS game and don't really care for its story, is this game still worth getting? I've seen some of the gameplay and it looks fun, but how much would I be missing if I didn't know the previous stories?
i havent played any other mgs game before but i kinda enjoyed it. only major problem i have with it is that after a certain point where you complete the main story you get the same last 5-10 missions again for a few extra cutscenes. its like the devs gave up towards the end and said " **** it. just put these cutscenes in with a replay of the last missions"
Kojima wanted to put a lot of content. That costs money. Konami is a poor decision making company with not enough money to fund Kojima's vision. So they booted him and just released the game as it is today.
Which is still not too bad. It wraps almost everything up and adds more to the metal gear lore. Still could've used at least the island mission though.
yeah it's like its own small story. Overall it's set right around the middle of the whole series so it doesn't add much to the whole storyline. It always helps to know who is who, but not required.
SPOILERS FOR AFTER MISSION 27 I THINK Its hinted that she can tell who is infected with the vocal parasites and the man that she attacked spoke Kikongo so she tried to cut out his tongue so he wouldnt speak. She was just trying to prevent the outbreak
