Internet explorer has the 'e'. They didn't do it to avoid the penis joke, they did it because they'd already used the 'e' on another program logo.

And it even has a use

Isn't it necessary for some things?

Afaik many programs are dependant on functions of the IExplorer.

Even if it's possible to delete it completely I don't think it is worth the work for a few MB hdd space
