actually for mixed chicken it's pretty much random but for purebred ones it depends on this part in the red circle. red for brown eggs white for white eggs it's not a 100% accurate though

down here in the south U.S., we use plastic eggs filled with candy for the egg hunt. The painted eggs are just for decoration.

We have chocolate eggs covered in foil which you hide.

I've never even heard of or seen the hiding real eggs.

Why would you want to get a real egg?

It varies. Some people just decorate eggs without hiding them, some hide chocolate eggs or jellybeans.
