inb4 tards defending smoking. No, there is a 100% consensus that it kills you, the main evidence being that people die.

I'm not smoking, but I'm pretty sure there's a 100% consensus that people die even without smoking.
User avatar #65 to #45 - shenro (10/21/2015) [-]
yeah, but the difference is the amount of time it takes to die and in what condition your body is throughout your life, since some people that smoke for a very long time, sound horrible.
#152 to #65 - chokebee (10/21/2015) [-]
Do you know how many people died in 20th century from smoking?
About 100 million.
Do you know how many people is estimated to die in 21th century from smoking?
About 1 billion.
Go and brag about it while you're getting shot, getting cancer (everybody gets that), getting a seizure or being turned into a messy bloated disfigured bag of meat and bones after a car accident or a train running you over.
See, the fact is, that we don't really know where's the line between smokers dying of lung cancer or heart attacks, because we all inhale the same air which, especially in big cities, has just as much carbon dioxide as if we smoked a pack of smokes. Daily.

If people can eat themselves to death, I don't see why they can't smoke themselves to death. Doesn't affect me in anyway as long as they stay away from me.
User avatar #96 to #47 - talldumbdork (10/21/2015) [-]
Eh....second hand smoke, birth defects, exacerbate asthma and respiratory illness of bystanders and rising health costs related to disease processes correlating to smoking can effect many people outside of the smoker. Im fine with letting people do things that dont harm or effect others, but there is some issues with smoking which is why we do regulate where it can be done etc.

You know what we Americans love to buy? Debt.

That's right, we buy debt. In fact our currency is based on debt. The bank gives out more loans than money it has. So where does it get this extra money? The Federal Reserve (another private bank) loans out money to these banks at an interest rate. Banks then loan out this money to businesses and individuals. Where does the Federal Reserve get its money? They make the US Mint print out more and more and more. That's right folks, a private corporation is in charge of your nation's money supply. More loans, more debt, more money.

However, the more money that is printed, the less it's value. Which is why inflation exists. Yes, it's not a natural market phenomenon, it's all controlled by people hellbent on making everyone poorer and poorer. No matter how hard you work and how much money you make, it's worth less and less every year and even though you pay taxes on the same amount.

'Merica is going the way of Zimbabwe and it's 100 trillion dollar bills...

'Mericans always think I am telling fables when I tell them credit does not exist in other countries.

#157 to #19 - heartlessrobot (10/21/2015) [-]
Except the more people that are working, and the more products that enter the market, the more the money is worth. So they print more in equal measure to the increase in workers and products, balancing it out.
You're probably one of those people that don't eat vegetables because they spread literal **** all over it, because you only take things at face value and refuse to see the whole picture.

Thats not how economics work at all. Our economy is based on debt, but debt isn't a bad thing. Thats how capitalism works.
User avatar #50 to #21 - stealingbikes ONLINE (10/21/2015) [-]
Debt is bad if you're the one who owes. Good if you're the one owed money too (ie: a credit institution). Unfortunately it's also the only way to raise your credit rating to allow you to do things like take out a mortgage or a car loan.

I'd be much happier to pay all of my debts in single large lump sums to avoid paying large amounts of interest, especially compound interest. Unfortunately that's not the reality, but that doesn't mean I can't keep paying the same overall amount each month and rolling the amount into paying the next debt once one is paid off completely.

I don't smoke but seeing people bitch and whine about their freedoms being taken away then blatantly trying to take others away pisses me off. It's their decision to smoke and you've forced them outside which is understandable but why try to berate them and take it away entirely?

#171 to #32 - anon (10/21/2015) [-]
They did something else in Norway. We have "snus", which is tobacco pouches you stick under your lip to satiate the need for nicotine. It doesn't affect others, and there aren't any lung complications.

Increased risk of throat/gum cancer, receeding gums etc are present though.

People can use stimulants if they want to, in my opinion. But the line is drawn around potential injury of others: Heroinists tend to get kinda douchey, smoke affects everyone in a huge radius around you, people high on amphetamines tend to not think rationally, and a huge ******** of drugs can induce potential psychoses.

Now, alcohol causes a metric ******* of yearly injuries as well. But it's so ingrained in our culture, it's impossible to take away. People need some form of drugs, and alcohol is pretty much among the mildest and most easily controlled and tested for substances out there.

E.g. you can drive while drunk, and there's basically no way for you to pass an alcohol test. You can, however, drive while high on certain synthetic drugs (synthetic weed, for example), and pass a drug test. If that specific strain of drug isn't included in the test perimeters, you're free to drive super-high and potentially injure others while under the influence.

taking away freedom is one thing.

exercising one's freedom of speech("berate them") is another.

That said, as the saying goes, my right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins. Smokers should be respectful of the feelings of others, but nonsmokers should be respectful to smokers.

In short, don't be an asshole.
User avatar #112 to #32 - dfgthree (10/21/2015) [-]
I can agree to banning it in family oriented places and such like restaurants, but as far as places like bars go, if the bar wants to make it so people can smoke in there, then let them. It's a bar for **** sake, if people don't want to be around it then there are always other bars, it should be up to the bar owner whether or not they want to risk taking a hit in profits, but I know a lot of people that would flock to it just 'because' you could smoke in there.

#154 to #146 - Stevethewizard (10/21/2015) [-]
Also, the flavoring that most companies use for menthols actually crystallizes in people's lungs. As if the tar buildup wasn't enough, there's menthol crystals building up, too.

To be honest they will never full out ban smoking (at least not in the US), it's the easiest and morally acceptable form of population control. People weed themselves out on their own free will. At least that's the way the government sees it.

but american spirits is probably your best bet, since you're probably gonna try it anyways
User avatar #36 to #17 - sasaiyasasha (10/21/2015) [-]
I wouldn't recommend you start, it's a very hard habit to quit. Also, if you start, get ready for all of the hate you will get for doing something that is disgusting and repulsive. I'm a smoker, I like smoking, I'm the worst.

But, if you just want to try, go to your local smoke/hookah shop. That's the first place I'd go if I wanted to try out a new cigarette or tobacco product. American spirits are great, but they are strong as hell, be weary of that, it's not a cigarette for first timers.

If I were you, I'd go and buy some loose tobacco Usually hookah/smoke shops carry natural loose tobacco with no preservatives in them. You can always ask. and roll your own cigarettes, then you can switch to a higher nicotine level of tobacco.
