I actually rather like the one near me. All the other gyms around here filled with gimmicky classes / workout groups making tons of noise, kids activities, pools, etc. Planet fitness is the only one for people who just want to shut the hell up and work out, and it's cheap as dirt (10 bucks a month here, cancel-anytime contract was only like 40 bucks to start up.)

I've heard some of them are pretty awful, but don't judge them all by the ones you've seen.

Thank you sir. I have so many questions. Is the woman doing deadlifts on heels? And what's the use of the iron weight balls below the people throwing the bar at each other? Does the risk of getting cracked nuts somehow motivate them to keep proper form? If so, it's not working.

This is all embarrassing to look at though.

Well I'm here to answer those questions child.

Yes, she is dead lifting in heels. I have no idea why either

And for the second one, the ball is not made of iron but is weighted, I believe they are using it to sit on and thrust back up to give power on way up and perhaps to stop their descent.
Why are they doing this exercise I hear you say, well these gentlemen are known as Cross fitters and will ruin any exercise in the name of looking good and injuring themselves. Just ask any Cross fitter and they'll brag for hours.

Welp, a short search on CrossFit taught me that while it's core discipline is not neccesarily bad, mostly it's weight lifting, cardio and cross fitness combined in the most ineffective and dangerous way possible.

I hate ********* . The majority of them have some kind of syndrome that makes them think they are better than everyone else because they manage to run around and cheat every lift they do with terrible form. The gif in 27 is the typical ********* pull-up that they actually believe are real pull-ups. It's called a kipping pull-up. Guys, a little advice, if you want to walk when you're older you don't do ********* . There is next to no functional value behind it and you would be much better off powerlifting with cardio thrown in or some training in a fighting form.

Crossfit is essentially a cult of retards dedicated to taking exercises and cheating them in the name of getting more reps in a shorter amount of time, like using cheat codes on your favourite game. And them proceeding to brag about to everyone. A fine example would be the gif above, where the "retard" uses their momentum to swing up as opposed to pulling themselves up. You would hear one say "I just did 40 pull-ups in a minute!" and the cult would give each other a pep talk about how cool they are.

The concept of crossfit is something along the lines of General Physical Preparedness. Covering strength, endurance, agility, speed, etc. The main site, or Crossfit HQ, has the goal to keep one performing constantly varied workouts and movements, and has workouts of the day (WOD) posted each day with some reoccuring ones. Now then, there are a few issues with some of the crossfit community that seems to take the headlines
1. the "coaches" typically aren't that experienced. Yes you'll find some that are excellent and worthy of being coaches, but to get a crossfit trainer certificate is apparently rather easy, and this isn't good in that you'll have an unqualified individual teaching very technical movements to others, and this is setting up for injury. Crossfit "Boxes" are also sometimes very expensive.
2. the "constantly varied" aspect isn't a very good way to measure progress. The random factor doesn't give someone an idea of how they have improved workout to workout.
3. Doing the WODs listed on the HQ will get you stronger if you are weak to begin with. In fact just about anything will get you stronger as an untrained individual. But if you're particularly strong, you will get weaker by doing crossfit. Considering that the WODs are mostly endurance metabolic conditioning that last more than 15 minutes, strength will diminish fairly quick.
I wouldn't call the community a problem. Whether you crossfit, powerlift, do oly lifts, bodybuild, etc, there will always be a group that claims their methodology is better than the other. Besides there are very good people who do "crossfit" (in quotations cause they really write their own programming and thus it isn't "true" crossfit) like Rich Froning and Dan Baily, and don't do ******* weird **** like in these gifs (minus kip-ups)
I personally believe the concept is interesting and will explore something similar once I achieve a good strength level. Search Gant Grimes hybrid, AGT program, or crossfit football
#125 to #120 - unknownbytes (02/24/2014) [-]
tl;dr crossfit as concept is good, but flawed for a few reasons. Community has just as many stupid/stuck-up people as any other. Community doesn't always have ****** form. Community has good people and respected athletes who are freaks of nature in their abilities.
I saw someone mention the dude who had his spine severed. That was a freak accident, nothing to do with form (guy was involved with crossfit for years. He failed a snatch or clean&press and it bounced back up as he himself was falling, there's a video around of it actually)
User avatar #169 to #125 - clannadqs (02/24/2014) [-]
The concept isn't good at all. There is no functionality behind it and going to failure on every lift is EXTREMELY bad for you. Take into consideration that these idiots go to muscle failure on almost every exercise they have in their circuit each day. I've seen it personally. After one time through the circuit you are performing reps with terrible form and only do a few reps before not being able to do more, then you come back for more the next time through and it goes even further downhill. I've done a few short crossfit workouts with my football weightlifting coach when I was in highschool because he thought it would be fun to do it with me (just me, him, and a friend). Within a few minutes it ended up either me having to perform a rep with terrible form or don't do the rep at all, those aren't good options. The most retarded thing I've ever heard is," Just push through it". Hell no, your body is telling you to stop and the more you push your muscles the more strain you are putting on your joints, tendons, and ligaments. The entire concept is stupid.
#173 to #169 - unknownbytes (02/26/2014) [-]
Perhaps the concept of crossfit at it's purest (i.e. as fast/as many as possible/beat the time/complete x rounds) wouldn't be so favorable, but I believe with the right application it is beneficial. I don't believe every WOD is meant to go to failure, I wouldn't want to dead or bench reps to failure cause of safety reasons; anyone who does otherwise is setting themselves up for injury or being negligent of the safety of others. Albeit online, I've seen plenty of the good, the bad, and stupid of crossfit, I've yet to see it in person aside from performing a few short and heavy met-cons myself. "Functional" is thrown around quite a bit, but I believe that rather than functional strength patterns (i.e. a deadlift's real-world counterpart would be pulling a box off the floor) crossfit would develop otherskills such as agility, coordination, speed, balance, etc. I believe that an intelligent individual, or at least one who has done enough proper research into the subject, should be able to understand how to perform one of these WODs safely and correctly, and not attempt to perform technical moves as fast as possible and as many as possible. No one with the knowledge to perform a clean & jerk would dare attempt to perform multiple heavy sets. Going beyond one's limits and pushing through pain can be found in any aspect of fitness: general, bodybuilding, crossfit, etc. but plenty of people agree with how stupid some points are, such as "just push through with it" for reasons such as rhabdomyolisis, loss of strength, risk of injury, etc. I think it all goes back to the coach and the person performing the exercises. I wouldn't be so fast to call out the entire thing and call it stupid. Stupid people will do stupid things sure, but there are ways to improve upon Crossfit. Whether or not it can be called crossfit in the end is the question.
