The density of a white pine is about 25 lb/ft^3

The density of oak is about 50 lb/ft^3

Plus you're shoulder is a great deal stronger than your arms.

As for the scots, well, they're scottish.

What you don't know is that the US soldiers were doing that as part of an obstacle course that includes, but is not limited to, a 12 km ruck march, low crawling up and down the Rocky Mountains with a saw (each), a grenade lane, zip lining the grand canyon, and then running a lap around Australia after swimming there.

If you're wondering where the log carry fits in to that, it doesn't. That's the 15 minute break period.

USA - Specific shoulder/tricep exercise. Not a stable carry position.
Russia - Weight on shoulder. Few muscle groups engaged. Incredibly stable.
Scotland - Well, it's an impressive sport.

the log that the soldiers are lifting is about 25 feet long and has been water logged.

If that log is from Scotland, its definitely water logged.

On the one hand, Scots invented golf.
On the other hand, Scots throw telephone poles as a sport.
Conclusion: Scottish sports were all results of drunken bets.

Not trying to be theon killjoy but i pretty sure that scotsman didn't just pick up a log and throw it he probably trained...a lot. as for the Russian the log is much smaller and probably not the same type of wood and its easier to rest things on your shoulder than lifting it up in the air. and for the muricans they look like they are training and have been holding the log up for a long time.

soldiers are also carrying that logs for atleast an hour with arms straight up.

It be called Caber Tossing, ya darn rotten basterd.

And ye'll have to beat me at it, if ye want me to join your pirate crew!

pleasepleasplease let there be someone who understands the reference

The whole point of the caber toss isn't really distance, that is a factor, but the straighter the log lands the better the points.
User avatar #177 to #175 - Loppytaffy (10/04/2013) [-]
This really is a competition of who is more of a man; "I can be straighter than you, sonny"

Fun fact from a living breathing Scottish person, because this is so often misunderstood.

"Tossing the caber" isn't about how far you can through the caber, it's more about how straight it falls. You want it to fall directly away from you, not to go left or right.

A perfect throw is 12:00, because it's seen like a clock face. So obviously 11:30 would be worse, and 10:00 worse than that. That's how the scoring works.
