A small grey wooden box with a silver rune "G forGaladriel". Inside the box was earth from Galadriel's orchard. The box also contained a silver nut from a Mallorn tree, the last east of the sea and west of the mountains. This was given to Sam.

This lil nigbbit got the last of a species..

Yeah, and it's from Galadriel's garden too, and since in the book Sam more or less spread it evenly around the Shire, it seemed to give a bit of the special quality of Lothlorien to them.

TLDR; extra special magic elven dirt.

you guys are right but you left out a few parts: Sam was given an acorn from the golden tree of light, out of all the gifts given his was probably the most valuable simply because it's acorn from an old ass that existed before men, also sheelob's grandma ate the tree so no more acorns.
The two trees of light were what brought light to the world before the laterns and the laterns came before the sun and the moon (might have got the trees and the lanterns switched) doesn't matter cause they all got eaten (cept the sun and the moon they're still there)

I was wondering about that. The books repeatedly said that there was something special about the trees of Lorien; I did guess that it was from the golden tree before they made the world, the way the tree of the king of Gondor was from the other silver one. What book was this explicitly stated? I only have The Silmarillon. Apparently there is a whole other set of books containing Tolkien's notes on Middle-earth.

You will find most of your answers in either the Silmarillon or unfinished tales, other places are Children of Hurin and a couple other books finished by J.R.R. Tolkien's son might have some answers.

I think you fail to read. She gave him what she refused the greatest Elf who ever lived, AND THEN twice that. That means that she gave him one, and to add something extra she added twice that. 1+2 = 3. His logic works.

the great elf asked for one stand of hair three times, and gimli only asked for one strand as well. so she gave gimli what the other asked. Which would make the "and twice that" statement turn the math into a 1x2=2, so it still doesn't make sense, but what the OP meant was 1 strand, then +2 ( a symbol of how the great elf asked 3 times). Try not to be a condescending asshole there keyboard warrior, your edginess is scaring the kids.

Here's a question:
If Middle-Earth has been about the 10th century by Earth's standards for many centuries and probably a few thousand years, why don't they have any sort of modern technology yet?
I would ******* love to see elves in space, or at the very least have dwarves on motorcycles or some ****.

The Iron Dragons which are capable of crossing difficult terrain and which contain within them companies of orcs are speculated by some, notably John Garth in his book Tolkien and the Great War to be in part allegorical of the tanks that made their debut in the Battle of the Somme. In the commentary to the text in The Book of Lost Tales Part Two, Christopher Tolkien seems to support this view saying that "the language employed suggests that some at least of the 'Monsters' were inanimate 'devices'."

The only explanation I can offer is that Tolkien wasn't a big fan of modern technology. He attributed the most technological advances to orcs/goblins (I don't remember the actual quote from "The Hobbit", but it's something about them inventing many clever machines).

what they invented was purely for destruction and death, pretty much what humans do right now. almost every major advancement in technology came from military, or was initially intended for something related to war. look at nuclear energy, jet engines and satellites. they were all a part of arms race but we couldn't imagine our lives without them. and there's many more examples where those came from.

Weeeeeeeell, it's kind of hard to advance technology when there's a ******* of wars and everyone's a selfish prick, who refuses to cooperate with the other races. Like Warhammer in a sense - they haven't invented any new technology in 20 000 years or so.

Many of human technological advancements were kinda warrelated, either being made for the use, funded for possible use, or used afterwards if possible It's a kind of motivator to be part of an arms race to have the better arms

To be fair, technology in Warhammer is pretty much banned and controlled by that one church religious group or w/e (I don't know that much about Warhammer to know the name). It isn't advanced because they aren't allowed to improve it.

Wasn't there a very long period of peace after the trilogy?
Like, centuries of it?
