RANDOM FACTS
When Gandalf dies after his fight with the Balrog, his
spirit goes out of space and time and returns to iluvatar
basically the God ' s universe). iluvatar
enhances his power and wisdom and sends him back to
Middle Earth to complete . The only reason this
happened is because Gandalf was the only wizard that
was actually fulfilling his mission and sacrificed himself
for his companions.
Aragorn wears a ring that has belonged to his ancestors
since the First Age. It' s called the Ring of Faramir, and
once belonged to Finned (bathin it was known asthe
Ring of Delaguna), a king ofthe High Elves. Finned gave
it to Faramir, a man, as a token of his eternal friendship
after his life. Since then, the ring passed
through the generations of his bloodline until it
eventually reached Elrond. Elrond kept it and later gave
it to Aragorn along with the shards when he
told him the truth about who he really was.
After being expelled from Orthanc, Saruman headed to
the Shire in company and took over control
with the men that served him in isengard).
When Frodo and girfriends returned, they encouraged
the hobbits to fight back and regain their land. At the
end, Saruman leaves but tries to kill Frodo
unsuccessfully. Frodo forgives him, but Grima, after
being humiliated by Saruman one last time, cuts his
throat with a knife. Grima is then killed by arrows the
hobbits shoot at him.
Sauron benefited from Shelob living at the entrance of
Mordor, for she would eat the intruders, preventing
them from entering the country from that side. He
called her "his cat" (although she never acknowledged
him as her master), and from time to time he would sent
prisoners to the for them to be eaten by her.
He also didn' t care if she ate some of his orcs now and
then, as he had plenty ofthem to spare.
The actual reason ' s horse fell upon him was
that it was shot with an arrow. After crushing him, it
rolled away from him. Merry approached the king and
shared some words with him, Ernerther in
to proclaim him King of Rohan Ariosto
his death. Finally, asked Comento bid Eowyn
farewell and died. He never got to know that Elwyn was
by his side all the time.
The Rangers ofthe North, along with Alladin and
Elrond' s sons) came to aid Aragorn and
encourage him to take the Paths of the Dead (where he
summoned the Jailbreakers). This group consisted in
thirty Dunedain, Aragorn' s kindred, and was called the
Grey Company. They were sent by Elrond in response to
a message from Galadriel.
never tempted to take the ring and he said
that he wouldn' t do so even "if it lay bythe highway". In
the novel, injokes and scares Frodo and Sam by making
them think that he was about to go full
them. Aragorn did the same thing when they first met
him in Bree.
i (awe
When Gandalf reunites with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli
in Fangorn entertaining into "the White", he states that
he cannot be hurt by any eitheir weapons. This gives us
just a glimpse of how powerful he has actually become.
in love with "Eowyn while both are in the
Houses of Healing. They become closer as the days pass
by and finally eowyn overcomes her love for Aragorn
and embraces Faramir. When she does so, they kiss
upon the walls ofthe city, in the sight of many people.
Their engagement is finally announced by Eomer in a
feast held in honour .
Aragorn served Stengel, father , and
Ecthelion, father of Denethor, for about 23 years under
an alias. He was known and often warned
Ecthelion about Saruman, suggesting him to put his
trust in Gandalf instead. His last deed under that name
was heading with a small float to a city called Umbar
and burning a great part of its ships in order to prevent a
future strike against Gondor.

Theoden is actually an Old English word meaning "prince" or "king" (root word Theod, modern Thede, meaning people, nation, kingdom)

Tolkien was a professor of Old English and took the word directly out of Beowulf (which he studied)

You can even see the word Theoden written on the third page of the original Beowulf manuscript (although it's written with the character Thorn "þ" which makes a "th" sound)

I wish that the ROTK movie had included the battle of the shire section, it went miles towards showing how the Hobbits had changed during their travels, Merry and Pippin even being described as having gained a few inches in height from drinking Ent drinks (I think it was the Ent drinks at least, it's been a while since I read the books)
User avatar #147 to #72 - vikingfaen (06/22/2015) [-]
Yeah, it's a great part of the book, but they made it so that after the ents capture orthanc, Saruman stands on the top and gets literally backstabbed by Grima.
User avatar #148 to #147 - saxong (06/22/2015) [-]
Yup, but for some reason that scene wasn't in the theatrical cut
User avatar #149 to #148 - vikingfaen (06/22/2015) [-]
I guess they didn't feel like extending the run time, even though it was a pretty substancial scene. The scene with Merry and Pippin drinking the ent water wasn't in it either.
User avatar #109 to #72 - ljxjlos (06/22/2015) [-]
Yeah, the cleansing of the shire was one of my favorite chapters - but I do understand why they didn´t include it. It would have been weird to have anothe 45 minutes of movie after the "end" - I always wished they´d just put it into the extended versions, tho.
#119 to #109 - sheiki (06/22/2015) [-]
I agree, it was a bit of a missed opportunity yet i understand as well why they didn't include it in the movies

Good stuff keep it up !

any books you would recommend about the LOTR universe? Well theres the obvious lotr trilogy but man those books are daunting. Also I have seen the movies so I dont know if its worth reathing those. The hobbit I already have read ,
#120 to #30 - sheiki (06/22/2015) [-]
I might suggest you get the audio books for the triology if it seems daunting, but not for the silmarillion, as there are way too many names to remember and the book has lots of pictures, charts, family trees and so forth explaining the situations quite clearly.

However I do recommend that you read or listen to the audio books of LOTR as it expands and explains what the movies left. Yes the movies are great, but the books are really worth the extra effort
User avatar #33 to #30 - ljxjlos (06/21/2015) [-]
Obviousl "The Silarillion" - it´s part bible part history book of the Tolkienverse. Then maybe some books that give a closer look to historical events like "Féanors Curse" or "Narn I Chîn Húrin" imo the best book ever written .

Then there are the "Letters from middle-earth" and "unfinished tales"...there´s quite a lot, actually.

Can anyone provide me the book and chapter for the first fact? Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to re-read Tolkien's works recently and the whole episode is a little fuzzy. I thought that the blue wizards and Radagast had done their job right (Radagast keeping back Sauron's corruption from spreading to far in the West and the blue wizards by disrupting Sauron's territories in the East) and Saruman was the only one who messed up.
On top of that I recall some suspicion on Saruman's loyalty even before he was sent on his mission. The Valar debated if they should put Gandalf in charge and then quickly realized that Sauron might try to corrupt the head of the wizards and they decided against it since they were not keen in losing Gandalf. My memory tells me that Gandalf only assumed the place that was meant for him after he defeated the Balrog and it was safe to do it.
User avatar #133 to #124 - Awesomenessniss (06/22/2015) [-]
I'm not at home and therefore can't provide the exact place in the book but Gandalf clearly made the greatest sacrifice by giving himself up for the good of the world, as for Saruman there was some concern about him but he was still greatly respected as leader of the Istari. When it comes to Alatar and Pallando they departed Eastward together shortly after arriving in Middle Earth and are never really brought up again, maybe Tolkien had a plan for them hidden away in his copious notes but we can't really know for sure without going through them and Christopher practically has them under lock and key.

The best scene in all the movies is when Merry and Pippin are smoking and eating food after the Battle of Isengard.

Makes me so happy

So I've been playing an MMO for about 4 years now, it's called Lord of the Rings Online. It definitely has it's flaws, but I really love it. The main questline (The Epic Quests) actually goes pretty in depth in the lore of LOTR. The Grey Company plays a large role in it. I really enjoy playing, and if anyone is remotely interested in LOTR I recommend it. That game is a large part of the reason why I got into the series, I had only seen the movies once or twice beforehand and now I've read all the books and I'm basically obsessed. Anyways, yeah give it a shot if you can.
User avatar #63 to #45 - dovahnon (06/22/2015) [-]

i wonder if LotRO has improved much over the years ?

i tried LotRO when it came out but got turned off to it cuz i compared it to WoW which i had been playing for at least a year at the time and i felt it just couldnt even hold a candle to the level of engaging fun i had already experienced on WoW which was mostly just exploring the maps while leveling one of everything.

now i'm just glad to have quit that type of game and regained alot my free time again to spend on multiple fun things.
User avatar #112 to #110 - MandiMarie (06/22/2015) [-]
Yeah I mean unfortunately I haven't played WoW so I don't know how they compare, but I definitely think the game has significantly improved over the time that I've played. And I mean I still have time for other fun activities, I don't exactly know what you mean by that. In the 4 years I've played, I've only maxed leveled one toon. Although I know people that haven't been on as long as I have who have several max level toons. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't play constantly, and you don't have to. I think I took a whole year off from the game and came right back to it.
