They never folded the steel of a Katana blade 1000 times. Ever. Not even 100 times. After about 20 foldings, the carbon content becomes too diffused in the steel and no further benefit can be provided from folding it further. Standard was anywhere from 8 to 16 folds, and very rarely ever went beyond that, and certainly never surpassed 20 folds.

I honestly can't tell it's meant to do that at all. On it's own it seems like a run-on joke about the idea of a Japanese pilot using their plane wings to cut the wings of other planes, which I doubt ever happened in WWII.
