My cat used to unravel it if it's the way on the right. Therefore, I got in the habit of putting it the apparent "wrong" way.

and there is no reason to put it the other way. So I guess the "backwards" way wins. Except for a bunch of peoples "no-reason" preference.

Reasons:
The patent shows it going forward.
Its easier to grab a piece when it's forward.
It rolls easier when it's forward.
You can see the pieces easier when it's forward.
Less chance of having pieces tear wrong when it's forward.

The angle you pull from allows the TP to roll with less friction behind it.
