>using 私
>not using 俺 or 僕
User avatar #53 to #49 - japanexplain (04/02/2014) [-]
Actually, when talking to a stranger it's quite impolite to use 俺 or 僕, and since you are not presumably older acquaintances it's a fair usage, also he is using the more formal version of the verb 死ぬ with which 僕 and especially 俺 seem quite out of place.(I realize that's all google, but still)

ore and boku are more masculine
if you use watashi
you sound like a girl
im assuming everyone on the internet is male until proven otherwise
User avatar #66 to #54 - japanexplain (04/02/2014) [-]
While that is true, that they sound more masculine, in fact only males are supposed to use them. You would never use them towards a stranger, watashi is completely gender neutral and you're very much supposed to use it. You may be thinking of atashi which is indeed girl's speech.
It's true they often use these forms of informal pronouns in anime and manga and the like, if you were to use it over here, I guarantee you you'll get strange looks. (Once they have gotten over the shock of a foreigner who speaks the language sorta well)
User avatar #67 to #66 - evilanakie (04/02/2014) [-]
im female
i use boku
i refuse to use watashi or atashi watakushi or what ever the **** it is
it may just be my pride in myself
but i have never gotten any strange looks
User avatar #68 to #67 - japanexplain (04/02/2014) [-]
Seriously? In Japan? Traveling, or did you actually study? (it may be that they don't show, because you're foreign, the people on the streets don't expect a whole lot from us) and it's all fine and good but it does make you sound like a tomboy. To Japanese people anyway. But as long as it's not Ore.
Also, weird thing to refuse, but all right.

my teacher would nail it into me
to always use watashi
i grew to resent it
at the end of the final year they took three of the highest marked students to a week stay
the problem was the school booked the tour for a two day
so i was there and back in a day and things were awful, how ever when i was there i picked up a DBZ statue they let me keep
i still have it
alas i have lost most of my japanese skill due to mal practice and we didnt really cover the kanji forms of words much
User avatar #70 to #69 - japanexplain (04/02/2014) [-]
Well, your teacher had good reason to. If you ever wanna live in Japan for an extended period, and not have to answer constant questions as to why you use "Boku" that is.
Also, I can't think of many places to work that would hire a girl using Boku, but I don't know why you learned Japanese so that may not be of concern to you, but yeah, it's all up to you really.

it was part of the schools curriculum
it was that or italian, i despise the language, my fathers side of the family is italian they used to beat me for being born out of wedlock as if i was the one to blame

User avatar #52 to #51 - languagexplain (04/02/2014) [-]
Of course I see japanese as a language. But this explain account deals with language in general, for specific languages see a specialist, ie. japanexplain.

I only speak about 7 languages myself, sadly enough.
