Belgian guy with a British girlfriend here.

If she's from the French part of Belgium, you're lucky she speaks any English at all. Those people are similar to the French and the Americans and British, and can only speak their mother tongue. Most Flemish people know at least a handful of French, German or English, or a mixture of them.

Since we're such a small country, learning other languages is a high priority in school.

This is complete ******** . We also have to learn a second language as soon as we're 8. Either german, english , and dutch. But the majority chose english...

Considering you mentioned Dutch, I assume you're a Walloon. Last I heard was that in most regions Dutch wasn't mandatory, nor was a second language (which you now informed me of that that isn't true). Could you explain a bit more in-depth about how the system works over there?

Basically, when you're 8 (5th grade or something similar?) You have to learn a second language, in most school it's pretty much just dutch and english but there are also schools that teaches german. You'll have dutch/english course till you turns 18 (when you get to the university).

But that's not all. When you're 14/15 years old, in most public(?) schools you also have to learn a third language. In my case, i took english classes at first, then i had to learn dutch and i even took spanish classes. The main difference is that the first language will be taught more in dept.

TLDR: Unless you're a poor ****** or retarded stupid you'll have to learn at least 2 other language. Most Belgian DO know how to speak english, they just do not practice it much so they tend to lose their touch

So you can choose between English and Dutch? That's quite different from what we see:
At 8 (5th grade in primary), we start being taught French. No choices there. English only appears in the second grade of secondary school (14). No choices there either. In the years after that, you have one year of German (mandatory lessons), and after that you can choose whether you want something called seminary (random topics), more maths, or German. We don't really get to pick though.

if you want to know why nobody care about ndls it's very simple it's because it's only used in belgium and that's a fugly language

If she is from the southern part of Belgium, then I guess it's normal her English isn't really good. But if she lives in Flanders, her English should be quite well because we get English lessions starting from the age of 14.
