But Gandalf, we all know you want the XP and kickass loot to boost your character. It'll be fun.

-It wasn't resurrected, only discovered
-It isn't a demon, and there is no hell

The nine balrogs are Maiar (the same type of spirit as Sauron and the wizards) that were swayed towards Melkor in the early day's of Arda's creation. After Melkor was defeated they were driven back into the depths of the earth, where they became dormant.

Chill, brah. It's a joke. I, too, have read the lore and realize that it's an exaggeration. (See the description. Also, my username.)

Well, he does help you defeat the Centipede Demon, The Gargoyles, and if you've been a good boy Lord Gwyn himself

Did Gandalf know about the balrog being there in the book? he seemed unsurprised in the film but not so much in the book, like he didn't quite know even what it was at first. I might be forgetting something though.

It's been a couple of years since I've read Fellowship, so bare with me if my recollection is incorrect. I think he knew it was a place best avoided, but didn't realize the dwarves had awoken a Balrog. I just pulled my copy out to make sure and he says '"A Balrog" muttered Gandalf. "now I understand.'"

Oh yeah, just had a look too to find out where he says it. I thought that might have been the case (that he realised afterwards).
