Did anybody else think his mask looked really roughly made? It looked like it was made out of leather scraps and duct tape, like they spent the rest of the prop budget and realized "oh **** , we forgot to make the mask and filming starts tomorrow!"

Everything about him was crude and piecemeal, including his saber. It represents how much of an amateur he is at this point. See how it's unstable and crackling?

The saber makes sense because there's a serious art to constructing one but the mask just seemed sloppy. Given his reverence for Vader you'd think he would have put in a little more effort.

I still can't let go of the idea it is a nod to KotOR's Darth Revan and his mask. It had to be inspired by it at the very least.

This isn't that much of a spoiler because it doesn't contain much you wouldn't have seen on FJ in the past couple days, but I'm gonna toss it under a spoiler warning anyway.

I liked Kylo as a villain. At first I was really taken aback by how he young and unassuming he looked without the mask but then I realized that was the point. He really was just a young man, he had no control of his emotions because of his age and it led him to his little angry " **** you walls" rampages. I was expecting him to be some lame Darth Vader wannabe, but they actually made him a Darth Vader wannabe and it was because - to a degree - Darth Vader was his hero, and someone he looked up to because he was so young and ignorant.

All in all I was really pleased with the movie, especially when it comes to character design - Kylo, Ray, and Finn were all great characters and I'm excited to see them return.

(That said I was real dissapointed with Captain Phasma, they made her this awesome, imposing storm trooper captain and then she didn't do_ anything_ at all, hopefully if she returns (and she probably will) she'll do something noteworthy.)

User avatar #28 to #25 - steelplatypus (12/30/2015) [-]
I didn't expect much from her, but since they went through the trouble of naming her, showing her in the trailer and in multiple scenes, and in casting a moderately well-known actress to play her (she's Brienne in Game of Thrones) - I expected her to do something other than just giving in and lowering the shields - she never even shot anyone

Agreed - i thought the writing, story exposition, pacing, and scene-setting was bad, but the effects, characters, and acting were all excellent.

Also, despite them not being super-samurai-ish like in the prequels, i thought the lightsaber battles were easily the best in the entire series.
#78 to #7 - thepizzadevourer (12/31/2015) [-]
TBH, his character made a ton of sense to me. I mean, just imagine the situation he grew up in:

His parents, and his uncle, are probably the three most well-known people in the Galaxy. Heroes of the Rebellion. One the last remaining Jedi, one the best military leader of the Rebellion, and one . . . well, Han's legendary in his own right. Heck, his parents are even ridiculously attractive. And he's just a quiet kid with no obvious talents and no looks. You might even say he's ugly. Probably the only reason he felt people noticed him at all was the fact that he was force-sensitive.

It's implied that Han felt uncomfortable with the responsibility of having a son, and despite the fact that he obviously loved him it's tough to imagine him being the constant factor kids need in their lives. Leia was loving, sure, but even she became frightened of his Force abilities and sent him away to train with Luke, the third person he'd been compared to all his life. I'd be more surprised if he didn't turn to the Dark Side after a childhood like that.

Finally, making Darth Vader his idol makes sense as well. He's the one person in Kylo's past who didn't make any demands on him. He's also the only person that arguably accomplished more than Han, Luke, or Leia. They simply destroyed the empire Vader created. And even though Han and Leia loved each other, their relationship was always at least somewhat dysfunctional. It's only natural that a kid who grew up in that atmosphere would end up wishing for a little . . . order. And let us not forget, he's the only Sith to date who has been seen to kill someone he cared for in order to increase his power in the Dark Side. I'm quite interested to see what they do with the character in the future movies. I'm hoping he ends up battling Snoke for the title of Lord of the Sith.

Actual spoilers - Well they had already prefaced that she was a strong fighter in the movie with the scene where she beat down the two guys who were trying to steal BB. They were also hinting I feel that she was far more attuned to the force than Kylo was, like when she was able to keep him out of her head, when she summoned the lightsaber to herself when he was trying to summon it, and even when the Supreme Leader expressed interest in meeting her. Sith may only have one apprentice and there was the possibility that he felt her strength and was considering discarding Kylo in favor of her - though that's more theory than fact.

With that in mind it made sense in the context of the fight that she was losing when she was just trying to fight him with the skills she knew but was able to overcome him while using the force, similar to how Luke was able to blow the first Death Star without the use of a targeting computer.

The Jedi mind trick is a little more of a stretch, but I think it's forgivable if you consider that he was just a random stormtrooper and she might be slightly more force sensitive than your average jedi.
User avatar #17 to #15 - emiyashirou ONLINE (12/30/2015) [-]
Luke is one of the most talented force users in history, and it took him months to lift up ******* pebbles. At the death star he only used the force to feel where he had to shoot, he didn't manipulate anything with it. Mind control is a very high level technique, being able to use it just because is complete and utter deus ex machina.
User avatar #18 to #17 - steelplatypus (12/30/2015) [-]
Yeah definitely true, her strength's were definitely well beyond what you'd expect of a new force user. For sure this could be seen as Abrams going a little too far with the abilities of Rey, but at the moment I'm going with the idea that she might be exceptionally adept, which would make sense considering I think they might be hinting at her being Luke's daughter - but really that's nothing more than a popular theory at the time. For sure the movie had several stretches, I'm just trying to get an idea for why they might be possible considering we likely won't know most of the facts until all three of the new movies are out.
User avatar #24 to #18 - jomeara (12/30/2015) [-]
I think that another important thing to consider would be Rey's upbringing. Depending on how much time she might have spent as a scavenger, she would likely have spent a lot of time bargaining prices and trying to get a better deal. Unconsciously, she could have been tapping into some of her force powers, without really realizing it. Nothing huge like complete mind control, but maybe getting the dealer to deal with her a little more favorably than others. For reference of this happening before, look at young Anakin in the phantom menace. without being conscious of his force power, he exhibits reaction times that are absolutely impossible otherwise. So while young anakin may have naturally learned reflexes, Rey might have learned some degree of force mind control, due to her upbringing. As such, as soon as she is made aware of how the force can do this, via Kylo's interrogation, she would be able to consciously focus an ability that she wasn't aware she was using until then, which could explain to some extent how she was able to use it so quickly
User avatar #29 to #24 - captainfuckitall (12/30/2015) [-]
But Anakin Skywalker WAS arguably the most powerful force-user to ever live, or at least the most powerful in his generation at the time.

It was literally part of his prophecy and destiny to be stronger than anyone, plus he already had an innate connection to the Force via being made through it, and even still he had trained for a long time to be able to operate swoop pods and pilot properly.

All in all, we're still talking about space-wizards here so anything is possible, but you're absolutely right in saying she's just too OP to even be on the same level of everyone else around her, and so far she's the only major character which DOESN'T have any sort of flaw or even opportunity for growth.
User avatar #42 to #29 - datassman (12/30/2015) [-]
I disagree, she still has plenty of opportunity for growth. Kylo was an easy fight, he'd already been severely wounded by a caster bolt to his side (you saw how powerful hat ******* thing was, it sent TR-8R flying like 8 feet) as well as having been wounded however slightly by Finn. Add to that the fact that she was already effective in close combat, albiet not with a lightsaber (you saw how clunky her fighting style was, considering she'd used a staff up to that point) and that presumably she had some sort of minor innate understanding of the force given her ability to make use of the jedi mind trick (a Stormtrooper not expecting her to be force sensitive would have no reason to strengthen his will, nor would he even understand what the force was so I assume that her tricking him was pretty easy.) and being able to summon the saber to her (another simple feat, Luke was able to do it in Empire while seriously wounded, and with little to no prior training in manipulating the force, only in minor saber combat). She has lot's of training to undergo in jedi ways and thought, as evidenced by her initial obstinate refusal to even take Luke's saber with her. She still has much to learn about herself as well, since she's spent most of her life living for some future point that will never happen.

#8 to #7 - anon (12/30/2015) [-]
My problem with him was the fact they let us see his face so early into the films. I think it would've been more effective to let him grow some more before you find out he's basically still child. The thing that makes the Sith intimidating is that they pretty much all have their faces obscured somehow.
User avatar #16 to #8 - steelplatypus (12/30/2015) [-]
I think in the context of the story it made sense that they (actual spoilers) showed his face so early - they wanted to create a character that you could empathize with as a major plot point in the movie was that he was Han and Leia's son and that they wanted to bring him back. Showing his face turned him from a powerful, ominous figure with little hope for redemption to a child with faults who could still come back to them, as he wasn't the powerful, ominous figure we were expecting him to be. It helped bring his character into perspective and made the scene where he killed Han all the more surprising as I think everyone who didn't already know what was going to happen was likely expecting Han to convert him.

Anakin couldn't act for **** , but at the very least he looked the part and had a lot of potential, even it most of that potential was wasted. He had a good reason for joining the dark side, his first acts as a dark Jedi were worthy of the title (killed every man, woman and child associated with the people who killed his mother, just as an example)

Kylo Ren... eh. His reason for joining the dark side is vague at the moment but right now it just seems to be a case of "that guy told me it was cool" - it's not like he was lacking moral support or anything. Before killing his father he felt a strong pull towards the light, which is kind of weak for a Sith.

I think what really gets me though it that his anger is more violent spurts of childish rage than seething hatred like Anakin's was. It makes him seem more conflicted than evil, and I kind of get the feeling that he was only taken as a Sith because there wasn't anybody else corruptible enough. Still he's not a Dark Lord yet, I kind of get the feeling that he's still to a Sith as a Padawan is to a Jedi
