I apologize for the incoming rant and i know this post is just a joke (and I loled) but if there's one thing that bothers me about this site, is the lack of sports fans and the lack of respect people give about sports. It's not even just this site though, anything outside of You need to login to view this link or other sports sites and I never see a sports fan. Hell if there's one thing I noticed about people, is that you're either a sports fan or nerd/geek, what you can't be both? I've met so many nerds over the years and almost NONE of them are sports fans! What really bugs me is that they say they hate sports, yet play a game like LoL or other game that has leagues (like a sport!), and say they don't get games like Football, soccer (amerifag here), or baseball?! Seriously, I mean SERIOUSLY!? What's to get? They're games like the video games we play! Sports are very entertaining (with some exceptions) and are apart of everyday culture, some more than others (I'm from Green Bay, WI, USA, we love our Packers), they bring people together towards a common goal, and have fun along the way! They allow people to display athleticism in mostly non-violent/non-lethal ways in competition against other athletes. I happen to love sports and nerd **** together, and for me, it isn't hard at ALL to love both.

Sports never have as complex objectives as video games (because they are sweet and simple, which some people like). Always who has more points, never who can destroy the other base first, objective modes such as capture the flag etc.

I mean, I am not adverse to sports, I am just more of a martial arts guy IMO, that is the only physical activity I really enjoy doing or watching. Other than that, I PC game and watch starcraft.

I beg to differ with some sports. Once you get to know a game, you really start to get to know how it works down to its minute details. Sure, the main objective of a sport is typically to score the most, but then again, every video game's main objective can be boiled down to something simple like that (get to the end of the level, destroy the base, hell, even "score the most points"). It's how that gets accomplished that makes it fun or not fun to watch. Take ice hockey (my personal favorite sport); obviously, you win by getting the most pucks in the net, but the whole manner the players go about doing that has so many factors to consider, considering there's power plays, penalty kills, body checks, a bunch of different ways to take shots (Wrist, Tip-in, Slap, 1-Timer, Wrap Around, Snap, Backhand, Deflection), and so many other things to come into play like puck-movement (forecheck), backcheck, icing rules, offsides rules, and so on.

On top of that, consider this: complex objectives do not mean that something is better. Games like Mario 1 are really simple, yet there's a reason it's such a classic; it's easy to pick up and play, while still being fun and challenging to beat.

I never said it was better or worse, I just said it is what I prefer. My opinion is not absolute, you can prefer sports if you want.

I point was more how people achieved that objective. Usually in sports it is in a very direct way (score), while in games like LoL, there are different strategies to win the game as a whole. You can focus on champion kills, or you can focus on farm for more gold. Jungle control or supporting/warding. All these things give advantages which are not bring the ball closer to the goal and are very important.

The only sports I like are cricket/baseball style sports, but I don't watch them regularly.

When I said I beg to differ, I was referring to when you say "never have as complex objectives".

League boils down to 1 thing in the end: killing the Nexus first. The way you go about it (farming, splitpushing, killing, objective control) varies from game to game. But it does in many sports as well. Ice Hockey for another example, being the only sport (besides pro LoL but I don't consider that a "sport") I really follow: you can play the game with a dynamic offense and shooting the puck like mad, you can play the game with a shutdown defense that never allows the other team room to breathe, you can play the game with an aggressive, rough ethic that makes the other team sore every time they go out to play, and if you watch the game, they score in so many different ways (trust me, to beat a goalie you have to be pretty darn reflexive, creative, or just downright persistent). The way you go about scoring goals in sports isn't all that different from competitive video games, because each one fits under a general mindset (offensive or defensive, aggressive or passive, careful or explosive, etc). Most teams will also fit a general way of playing in both. And there is a very large amount of practice, strategy, play mechanics and so on in both.

And personally I can't stand ball and bat games because the amount of strategy involved in them isn't quite as key, and the teams depend very little on player synergy or teamwork.

All that said, what you prefer is 100% up to you, and if you don't want to watch something that you just don't find entertaining, that's fine. You can get into all manner of reasons and justifications, but "I just don't enjoy it" is all the reason you need to not like something. I wasn't telling you not to like something, merely to consider that sports aren't as simple as you think, at least from the impression I got from your initial comment.

The end goal is just as simple, but E-Sports such as DotA, LoL and SC constantly create smaller problems which need to be addressed first before the bigger objective can even be handled (As opposed to sports where straight away, one can theoretically focus on scoring as soon as the game starts).

Economies to manage (and harrass), Item stats, ganking. Vision and field control. Buffs and creeps. All these things are what makes E-sports more complex, because traditionally the end objective was the only one (Attack/Defense of goals) due to the games not running on a computer to manage those variables easily.

But as we agree, it is opinion. I was just poorly trying to get across that since you have a computer in the background managing things, that E-Sports can create games traditional sports cannot without being wildly confusing.

And I don't 'Like' Ball and bat games, I just watch them more than football and rugby when I am bored. Much prefer watching martial arts, but good tournaments are hard to find often.

There are mechanics and tiny little details like that in every sport, (except for item stats), The major difference being that it's humans and not in-game avatars.

Also the "e-sports" you're naming pretty much refers exclusively to LoL and similar MOBAs (each of which has its own nuances).

On the confusing note however, I'd argue that most e-sports are already wildly confusing if you don't know how the game is played. And there are sports like that too (******* Cricket).

Also, if you want that explanation with Starcraft, it would go something like 'Who keeps track of the resources, what units can or can't do (Similar to chess, but with attack speeds), maps, 'Hidden' units.'

Thinks a computer and graphics engine would do better than physical tokens and avatars.

Again, I think you misunderstand me. Other sports have their own details, but they are never as complex. The difference, is one is running on a computer, and thus, players don't need to work out all the different variables, it is done automatically.

This allows for more complex games. Imagine a sport where you had 3 lanes (and twisting paths in-between them) which 5 people per team had to defend towers (which supposedly shoot/ Are a threat) while destroying creeps (who would play the creeps, what rules would govern them) to buy items (which give benefits, but who keeps track of these benefits. How much currency does a creep drop), to eventually destroy a goal (and win).

It would make no sense, it would be confusing for players AND viewers, and a logistical nightmare to make it work and be fair. But, when you run it on a computer, the computer controls the calculations and visual representation, meaning all players and viewers need to focus on is the action.

I am NOT saying 'E-sports are universally easy to understand/Are better' or that 'Normal sports have no complexity'.

I am saying E-sports are MORE complex objectively, because a background computer allows them to be more technical and have more variables. Doesn't mean you don't need to know how the game is played (which can be confusing in itself) but the game would be far harder to understand using physical representation and played live.

TL;DR: A computer allows digital sports to have more objectives and variables than physical sports, because physical sports are designed to be easy to work out who is winning at a glance with no aid of a machine.

Fair enough, video games do a lot more hidden numerical calculations.

Conversely though, what they don't have is as much of a human element. And humans are arguably more complex than a machine will ever be. But that's a different argument altogether.

I guess part of it is I don't see what exactly would make it more appealing, apart from the fact that it's arguably easier to actually get into playing it yourself.

As I said, I was not implying superior, but giving a reason some people might prefer it. They are games which could not exist without the 'Digital' aspect.

I totally agree that they can seem impersonal, for example, you might not know what your favorite player looks like but instead what character/race they play. It is part of the advantages and disadvantages of both formats.

I'm a big hockey fan. They don't even give us respect on ESPN. So I don't even know what you mean by "except on ESPN".

But obviously, a website like this isn't dedicated to sports, so of course it doesn't focus on them. There are funny sports related gifs, but that's about it. That doesn't mean people don't respect them, and besides there's no problem with people who don't like sports. On the flip side of things, there isn't a lot of general disrespect towards sports on this site either. If you want to talk sports, there is the FJ sports board.

Bit of a generalization, I played halo 2 to death as a kid (only 22 now TBH, not exactly an 'old man') and I still practiced karate and have now started other martial arts. Still never liked traditional sports more than I do watching starcraft 2 streams now.

There has always been lazy kids, just now they are not as isolated due to the internet and thus seem more numerous. Before the internet they would just play boardgames and cardgames/Read books. Keep to themselves and a few friends, the 'Nerds'.
