Thats probably exactly what is happening, its actually a fairly common practice to obtain domain names someone else might want and to resell them for a ridiculous up-mark. Im pretty sure that theres been a handful of names that have even gone for a million + like this.
Reminds me of the story of dude chillin in a starbucks when a random group of suits starts having a meeting.
The suits are being loud and start discussing domain names to purchace. so the annoyed dude buys all of them, then askes them if they would like to buy from him, and suggests they loudly discus privet buisness maters not in public
