Nah. It was Ridley. I think he actually ate them, because in the comics or books, he makes a comment about how her mom tasted. I know he doesn't talk in the game, but he talks in the comics and books.

The Space Pirates attacked Zebes where both Mother Brain and Samus's family were stationed. Mother Brain turned on the Galactic Federation during the assault.

They really screwed Samus up in Other M. She's supposed to be one of the original badasses of Nintendo games and probably the first female badass of all games, and how do they portray her in Other M? Pathetically. She's faced countless space pirates, Metroids, the mother brain and Fought Ripley on pretty much every Metroid game, so do they have her react when she see's him in Other M? So scared she can't move to save her friend who's murdered right in front of her. That's like saying Lara Croft is afraid of breaking a nail or getting dirt on her boots

User avatar #26 to #13 - indecisivejew (09/30/2015) [-]
Its because he's the only other Metroid character who's iconic enough for people to recognize, and Metroid is always underrepresented in Smash for how popular it is in the west. Of course Metroid fans are going to want more than a singular character in, and Ridley is the most obvious choice (although Dark Samus could have worked too before they made her an assist trophy). Plus he's a would be heavy and an important villain, both of which are terribly underutilized in the Smash roster. Villains always do the best in polls, because they have cool designs and there are so few of them in smash.

Problem is Japan doesn't care nearly as much for the series, and his size makes him tough to implement.
User avatar #32 to #26 - sooshishef (09/30/2015) [-]
There are others they could do like Rundas, Gandrayda, Ghor, Sylux, Anthony, or Adam, but overall, each were small roles in their individual games.
User avatar #33 to #32 - indecisivejew (09/30/2015) [-]
Like I said, he's the only one that people will recognize.

A few of those other ones might work pretty well, but in general people who want Ridley want more metroid representation, and Ridley is one that a fan of any of the games can get behind, not just one time appearances.
User avatar #34 to #33 - sooshishef (09/30/2015) [-]
I agree, just pointing out other ,albeit weak, options.
#27 to #26 - awesomite (09/30/2015) [-]
The dumbest thing is they gave the excuse that Dark Samus would have been too similar to Samus, yet they go and create an Assist trophy proving how different she would've been. And then stupid **** like Dark Pit happens (I'll admit I prefer Dark Pit stat wise to regular)

Although on the subject of Clones, Lucina, Dark Pit, and Robin being costumes converted to characters is totally understandable, what isn't it taking the time to rig eight stupid "characters" when they could've used the same time to make at least one REAL character

Height shouldn't be a problem.
User avatar #52 to #38 - makotoitou (09/30/2015) [-]
The main concern was proportions, not definite size. Compare character from the same series and the proportions are pretty close (Bowser is about twice Mario's size in both game canon and smash, same thing with Dedede/Kirby). Meanwhile Ridley is massively bigger than Samus, and shrinking Ridley to be just around Bowser's size would be weird considering he would be around the same height as Samus in smash, while in game canon he is many times larger.
User avatar #83 to #52 - leonhardt (09/30/2015) [-]
Bowser randomly changes size depending on what game he's in.

In Super Mario Sunshine he was ******* massive.
While in most Mario Party/Kart/Golf games he's only a few feet taller if he's playable.

It wouldn't ******* matter.

If I remember correct Sakurai (the creator) said that he had considered Ridley but that he couldn't make him feel as Ridley while preventing him from becoming OP.
#55 to #45 - bluemagebrilly ONLINE (09/30/2015) [-]
Was just an excuse. You could say that about any of the villains, especially someone like Ganondorf who could probably blow up an entire stage with one attack. Or Bowser, who could grow super-sized and smash it with his foot. Almost all the villains, excluding Duck Hunt, are that powerful in their games.

Sakurai just didn't want to put effort in to make Ridley around that image. 'Tis also why he refuses to change Ganondorf. He doesn't want to lose the character he likes to play, so he didn't put in effort to change it.
User avatar #43 to #41 - penileburglar (09/30/2015) [-]
Ehhh, they made Little Mac and Rosalina work. Hell, IIRC when Captain Falcon was first put into a game he'd never actually been outside of his vehicle in a game. Ridley actually has a huge variety of possible attacks from the various games he's been in.

I think it's just that Nintendo has TONS of franchises and characters to choose from, they simply can't possibly make EVERYONE happy. Also, as a few people have pointed out, Metroid is not nearly as popular in the US as it is in Japan. That's why we have five Fire Emblem characters, because it's really popular in Japan.
#47 to #43 - bluemagebrilly ONLINE (09/30/2015) [-]
Little Mac's move set is that of actual boxxing. That's easy to copy. Rosalina's moveset is what was left of Ice Climbers. Captain Falcon actually has his own anime, you know? His iconic Falcon Punch comes from that. Ridley had a high potential, but you've seen Ganondorf. Sakurai isn't the most creative developer, and he's definitely not one to stick to his own words.

Fire Emblem is actually very popular in the West too, mostly because of how Roy and Marth were famous in Melee, but it's not entirely Nintendo's call on who to put in and what. The main guys would have the final word, but Sakurai was put in charge of the game and most of his choices are the reason the game ends up this way.
User avatar #59 to #47 - dittoexodia (09/30/2015) [-]
Ganondorf actually only ended up barely making it into Melee, which is why he was a Cpt Falcon clone. They just didn't have enough time too make a unique moveset. He has gotten more unique (though I do wish they'd give him his sword or some magic.)
User avatar #67 to #59 - youngneil ONLINE (09/30/2015) [-]
Project Ganondorf Trailer
This is pretty cool. Something like this in the games would be amazing.
#61 to #59 - bluemagebrilly ONLINE (09/30/2015) [-]
Yes, and that was acceptable back then when Melee came out. Especially when there was already like four other clones.

But it has been two games since then. Years have passed. If they couldn't think of a new move set for Ganondorf in that time, then they clearly didn't want to give him one. I'll admit they changed him a bit from Falcon, but... He's still not really the Ganondorf we all know from the Zelda series. Like, why does he not use Dead Man's Volley? It's disappointing.

Far as I'm aware, Sakurai loves playing Ganondorf as he is, and that's apparently the reason he has said to not really change Ganondorf to what he should be. But that's just an assumption and nothing clear has been said on the matter.

I was under the impression it came before Smash.
User avatar #49 to #47 - penileburglar (09/30/2015) [-]
Yes, Fire Emblem has some fans in the US, but it's nowhere NEAR the big name that it is in Japan. Keep in mind that on the Wii U, it's better represented than Kirby, Donkey Kong, and Metroid, and equally as represented as The Legend of Zelda. That's definitely proportional to it's Eastern popularity, not it's Western popularity.

As for Captain Falcon... Unless I've missed something, the anime came out five years AFTER his debut in Super Smash Bros. The anime was 2004, Smash Bros 64 came out in 1999.
#51 to #49 - bluemagebrilly ONLINE (09/30/2015) [-]
I never said it was near, I just said it's pretty popular over here too.

Possibly correct on that one 'bout Falcon. I don't actually know when the anime aired or was planned before then. But one thing to consider, regardless of if the anime was up by then or not, is that they were much more creative back in the 64 days. There wasn't quite as much stuff that had already been done, and the entire idea of Super Smash was something new and exciting to the people of Nintendo like Sakurai. Making a move set for Falcon was probably easy.

Almost all the characters from the original were pretty unique and that carried over to the next few games in regards to most new comers... But I feel like after Melee they just ... stopped caring a little bit. It's obvious they still love making the game and playing it themselves, but tripping in Brawl and all these clones we've had to deal with kind of shows that Sakurai has been getting tired of public opinion.

So, I still have to say they probably wrote up a Ridley move set and thought about putting it in the game, but couldn't "figure out" how it worked. Then people kept asking for Ridley, so Sakurai just told everyone to scrap the character design and focus on making him a stage hazard instead.
