just like in university. so many people play hearthstone, league, binding of isaac or pokemon during lectures. why even go at all? nobody cares if you're there or not anyway.
Theres a guy in my 3d animation class that just watched Twitch streams and played hearthstone on his phone the first month or so, another guy on whatever that "can has cheezeburger" site was, and someone else watching anime
I remember back in Business college we had a week project and got in class with some of the other classes.
They were so ******* unserious. Watched movies in class with speakers on and teacher dind't do **** .
Originally the project was so simple. Just a 12 page to hand over end of week, but when they were done they delivered just a printed image of this pic
I have a lab that i regularly do the work beforehand since its a long term project that we are working on, and the professor takes attendance. So ill have a game that can be played slowly like civ 5 so i can help out people around me and take notes on the few sporadic things my professor will say every once in awhile. That and i sit in the back and use double tap my track pad for mouse clicks so i dont interrupt other people.
Im in class now, **** is insanely pointless, this grad student thats teaching is on about her moms cooking. Attendance is 10% of the grade, so here i am. Otherwise i'd read the book, study the handouts, and pass the tests without being here jsut like i do now.
I was thinking about the same, for example this chick who played candy crush on her mac in every lecture, except that one where we were asked to not use computers, where she was playing on her phone. As soon as the first assignment rolled around the corner, she made a facebook post about how University is just so hard and that she has no idea how to write an essay... Probably because she was playing through highschool too.
Allthough I gotta admit that sometimes the lectures are only slow as **** recaps of the material you had to prepare, and since I prepare, I was bored beyond existence.
I don't know about most people but just passive listening to the lecturer and seeing bits and pieces here and there still allows for some forms of learning, but yea i totally agree if you are going to play games you might as well not attend.
I'm a league player myself but I hate those pricks who pull out their laptops in a lecture and go into a game, to top it off I see people doing this sitting at the front of the class. Like why? Are they showing off? Do they want us to stop paying attention to the lecture and watch their screen? It's pathetic.
If you're gonna be playing games during class, just stay home for ****** sake. Again I'm a league player and in my structural eng lectures these same asians sit in front of me and play league, it's REALLY hard to not look. I hate looking rude but I've had to get up and move so many times because of my proximity to them.
i go because in my math recitation class, we solve half the homework. i play hearthstone until he starts solving homework problems. i sit in the back and use my laptop pad so it makes no sounds and no one can see my screen.
i've seen students do this in classes - and I was guilty of procrastining in my lectures back in the day too.
I think it's more of a "Oh I know this bit, I'll just procrastinate a little...." then they pay attention again, and realize the small bit they knew was 17 slides, 49 terminologies and 5 formulas back. Then they go "oh **** ".
Dude they're asian. The odds are they already know all of that **** . They're just there in case of pop quizes, assignments, etc.You don't have to be asian for this to apply to you either.
And for those who have to attend classes for attendance grades, sit in the back so you don't annoy anyone behind you. It's hard not to look at a flashing screen or a character moving around. I even found watching solitaire to be entertaining in class, so please be considerate to others if you're going to throw away your education.
If you don't think you need to go to class to get an education, don't pay for tuition. It's not the only way to learn, and I never implied that at all. I'm just saying you shouldn't go to class to distract everyone else, but if you're relying on class to give you attendance marks, sit in the back instead of being inconsiderate.
In the UK at least, colleges and Uni's provide different disciplines as well as different certifications and degrees. So anon is correct in a way, they are different, at least in different countries.
in this case it doesn't matter ******* anon. I go to university, attendance still counts. depends on the professor though, and I'm positive that's how it is in most cases
My university started making professors take attendance for classes and I've had several professors who put attendance into grades... Almost failed one of them because I was late so much ( ******* general education ******** class was also the first one of the day)
To be honest, you coming in late is more disruptive than just flat-out not showing up. You don't disturb students nor the teacher by not making an appearance. But if you loudly open the door and shuffle across seats, you're being disruptive.
To be honest if I were a professor I'd make being late have as much of a penalty as being absent.
That's a rather draconian approach to attendance. I'd hardly call what you're describing anything more than a trifling disruption, one hardly worth yours or anyone else's ire.
In my opinion, it is almost insulting to the students that a teacher should take such a stance, given that students often come from wildly different places in life. One student may live a block away, another across the city. One student may have no job or outside responsibilities, another may have a job and a family. If they are being truly disruptive, then I agree with your sentiment - action should be taken to reprimand or correct the student. Otherwise, what harm is there in allowing a student to quietly walk in? Clearly they at least wish to learn, and that's something rarely focused on in American colleges these days.
As adults, we should be able to understand how to enter a room without creating unnecessary disturbances, and we should also be able to understand that there is life outside of the classroom. If you treat your students as children who need to be herded, you might find yourself suddenly teaching less classes as students avoid yours for some "inexplicable" reason. I'm not saying that they should all be allowed to waltz in whenever they please, since adults should also be able honor punctuality, but a balance should be struck. Your approach would likely engender more absences than attendance, but seeing as that is your belief that absence is better than tardiness, I suppose that is a risk you're willing to take.
I agree, it does seem a little rough doing that, but I can only imagine that it's really disrespectful to show up late to a class, perhaps moreso than just not showing up that day.
I'm not saying "make the tardy students have more penalties than those who don't show up" as there should be at least SOME motivation to come into a class if you're late.
I think being a minute or two late is ok, that's understandable if that happens. But if you're, say, 10-15 minutes late I think you run the risk of interrupting class or breaking the teacher's flow.
That said, with my major and the university I went to, I went to mostly small classes where the teachers knew each student. I had very few classes in lecture halls with dozens/hundreds of kids. So you can probably imagine how that would affect my opinion on the matter.
So you'd rather me not go in at all rather than walk in 5 minutes late as the professor hadn't even begun teaching?
"You haven't showed up to class for half the days, why's that?"
"Well, I was going to be a few minutes late, but thought timeliness was more important than the actual lectures. You can probably understand."
Yes, I just hate it when people do that. But that's not the worst part.
Not paying attention? Whatever floats your boat.
Playing a game during lectures? Sure go, ahead, I don't mind.
But the ******* play LoL, and I have to listen to mouses being click-raped for 90 minutes.
And I'm just sitting there, in the middle of the cacophony of right clicks. *CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK*
Lmao are you kidding me right now? The majority of all my classes will lower your grade at least a letter, if not failing you outright for missing more than a handful of days. Don't ******* tell me I don't know how university works when I'm actively taking classes you prick.
didnt know there are unis that give attendance grades.
from my experience i made at my uni it just sounded unimaginable.
has to suck :c
attendance grades were the most evil **** back in school.
I went to a community college where they take attendance, to a University in California (UC system) where they do not care with 300-400 people in each class. Many days the class would only have 60-70 students in attendance out of 400 because people didn't care. I hate hand holding. If you pass the tests you know the material. So i prefered University hands off method to (extended highschool) method.
You know that cracked "portable" version of halo: combat evolved PC that some guy made for piracy purposes?
I put it on a flash drive and stored it on my high school's public directory, meaning anybody with an account at that school could copy/paste the game on to their desktop and play it (campaign, local, and online multiplayer). It got deleted several times, but i kept putting it back up and eventually other people put it back up too and so they just stopped trying to get rid of it (it wasn't causing any problems and it wasn't technically violating any rules by being there). 5 years later and it's still there, and I hear somebody even fixed it to have the update that doesnt require gamespy, meaning multiplayer still works.
If I ever go back there (parent works a a teacher there and i tag along some times as a registered volunteer to help out) I might take advantage of their brand new computers and put the ElDewrito mod of Halo Online there.
During my programming class in CS the guy sitting besides me was watching the entire Dbz saga(for the first time) for the whole semester, he got a really high grade in that class since he was already a high level programmer..
oh jesus that is realy bad. like im not going to ******* pretend like i wont ocationaly go on youtube in class instead of doing my work but the fact that both of them were playing lol in a room of three sugests that its probably more frequent.
wow. I see many don't agree. well, I don't know how it is in the rest of the world but in italy universities are useless.
better to just decide what you want to do and go do it asap. learn at work.
