Jontron sings Firework!

 

So Jontron finally singed the full song! He did a bit of it in his Dino city video and people enjoyed it, so to thank everyone who helped donate to TeachForAmerica last September, he did a full cover! I'm educated in music as well, which is why I am able to tell. The whole song, including the vocal track, was processed to sound like a professionally produced song, which it is. This was not done in one take, and effects were applied to his voice. If you listen to when he sings "'cause baby you're", there is a noticeable change between "cause" and "baby", this was probably the end of one take and the beginning of another. As far as effects go, you can here the reverb and delay that was added whenever he releases a note, which is a more noticeable vocal effect.

The less noticeable ones, like autotune, eq'ing and compression are less noticeable to an untrained ear. If you open up the audio file from this video, you will find that in the chorus (specifically the "iiiiii" in "firework", for reference), jon's vocals are exactly on about 951 Hz (with perfect upper harmonics on 1.4 kHz, 1.8 kHz, etc), and they stay there for the duration of the note. I don't know of many humans who can pinpoint the exact frequency that would be in tune with the rest of the song, sing it, and hold it for its duration. This also repeats in the "aaaa" in "whaaaat you're worth" and a few other spots.

Most people assume that autotune sounds like robotic voices, but this is a misunderstanding. It is one of many subtle effects added to vocals to make them sound "produced" and "professional". I'm studying this process, which is the job of audio engineers, and if you learn a bit about it too, you can hear the processing in every remotely popular song that is in digital format.

Sorry, I'm really trying not to be rude, but I think that an untrained ear can hear it fine.
Not majoring in audio production, and I just do general media production as a hobby, but it's pretty obvious to anyone who has a grasp of the fundamentals how autotune sounds.
I just think people don't really care if JonTron is autotuning his voice here. Not at all. They just wanted to hear the song.

sorry bruh but the vocal is way too clean sounding for any kind of pitch correct, Also Melodyne is a brand "autotune" software ( that if it was being used ) would still sound noticeably altered.

The vocal sounds clean to you because it has been processed through multiple effects. I can explain the process if you are interested.

This vocal track was not recorded then published on the internet. It was recorded in multiple takes onto some sort of DAW, likely Pro Tools (which allows audio engineers and producers to turn rough recordings into polished songs, like this one), then the best takes were pieced together . Next, the entire audio track was run through a series of effects (or routed through in parallel), including some reverb, delay, and an autotune plugin (maybe melodyne, maybe Waves Tune). Then, the track was mixed with the other instrumental tracks (which were all produced in a computer, there was no live orchestra involved here) and the master track was put through a few more effects to give it a sense of cohesion.

This process is called mixing and mastering, and it takes a while to do this on a professional level, but I'm getting there.

It doesn't take a professional singer to sing in tune, most people working with music can do it, even if they have almost no experience in singing. Although it's clear Jontron has, this song is demanding as **** .

Source: I've been a singer for 5 years, gonna start my studies to become a singing teacher next fall.

I believe you Bill. It is auto-tuned. Listen to when he takes the octave up when he sings "cuz baby you're a fire work." Every single time he goes to the chorus it sounds exactly the same. It also does sound slightly synthetic. I love JonTron as much as the next guy, but if asked I'm 100% positive he would admit to having autotuned this song (which imo isn't the worst thing in the world).

I actually don't understand why people think Danny is a great singer. He has great pitch, but little-to-no power or soul. His voice sounds very generic with no punch. He's a cool guy, but I can't get with his music.
